Sommelsdijk combines a protected townscape with distinctive historic buildings, regional culture, and routes through the countryside. If you are considering the town as a destination for your stay, these different facets can help you get your bearings: at its heart is a village layout with its own distinctive structure, complemented by a long architectural history, a museum offering a special experience, and historic dikes suitable for cycling.

A Village with a Clear Structure

Sommelsdijk is a Voorstraat village with a Kerkring. It was laid out in the Oudeland van Sommelsdijk polder, which was diked in 1465. The Voorstraat leads into a spacious Kerkring—the layout gives the town a clearly recognizable spatial pattern. The government designation as a protected townscape also refers to “Middelharnis / Sommelsdijk.” Thus, the street layout and historic character of the town take center stage alongside individual buildings: you can appreciate the town not only through a particular building but also through its village layout.

Church, Windmill, and Museum

The history of the Hervormde Kerk goes back to the 15th century: it was founded in 1464 and completed in 1499. It was partially destroyed by fire in 1632 and again in 1799; it was rebuilt in 1809. The two fires and the subsequent rebuilding mark distinct stages in its architectural history, without replacing the original founding and completion dates.

Another historic building is Molen de Korenbloem. This round, stone smock mill was built in 1705 and is the oldest windmill on Goeree-Overflakkee. Compared with the church’s long history, the windmill stands out primarily for its design and its status as the island’s oldest mill.

The Streekmuseum Goeree-Overflakkee is housed in distinctive 17th-century houses with stepped gables. The museum includes an immersive virtual reality experience about the 1953 flood disaster. The architecture and the experience offer two different ways to engage with history: through the historic houses and through an account of a specific event.

Art, Events, and Regional Specialties

Hofstede Lust & Last dates back to 1672; the residence on the grounds is a Rijksmonument. The Hofstede is also the annual venue for Kunstkijk Goeree-Overflakkee. Holle Bolle Dag is also held in Sommelsdijk every year. It brings together history and community with a craft market offering local products and handmade goods. The program may vary from one edition to the next.

At the Proeflokaal of Brouwerij Solaes, visitors can enjoy a wide selection of beers, including seasonal beers and beers from collaborative breweries. Bakkerij Koese sells Kruukplaetjes, a Flakkee specialty. These offer different perspectives on local culture: an annual market, beers at the Proeflokaal, and a regional pastry.

The art of Jaap Reedijk is also among the town’s cultural highlights. In his studio, his work in painting and photography meets imagination; his works combine abstract and recognizable figurative elements. The Havenkom, in turn, offers a waterside spot to take a break while viewing Reedijk’s artworks. In this way, art and the waterfront come together in two different locations in Sommelsdijk.

Historic Dikes and Cycling

De Spin comprises four interconnected historic dikes. Two of them, Panksdijkje and Sint Christoffeldijk, are in Sommelsdijk. The dikes are historic and rich in flowers, and are suitable for cycling. Rare plants such as agrimony, cross thistle, and wild marjoram grow there. If you prioritize the countryside and cycling when choosing where to stay, this offers a different focus from the churches, windmill, or cultural attractions in town.

Sommelsdijk can therefore be matched to several specific interests: the layout of the historic village, buildings from different centuries, regional culture, or a bike ride along the dikes. These highlights are easy to distinguish without reducing the town to a single attraction.
