When looking for a hotel in Lisse, it helps to organize your visits by theme: tulip culture, museums, architectural history and cycling each offer a different focus. The attractions also vary in terms of season, opening hours and reservations. This lets you decide whether fixed visiting times, a seasonal garden or a self-planned cycling route best fits your plans.

Garden Culture and Tulips

The historic garden at Keukenhof features authentic tulips from the 16th and 17th centuries. They illustrate 400 years of tulip cultivation in the Netherlands. Keukenhof is a historic park covering 32 hectares. Around seven million flowering tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and other bulbous plants can be seen there. Together, these details show both the long history of tulip cultivation and the diversity of bulbous plants.

A 45-minute ride in an electric whisper boat is also available at Keukenhof. An audio tour accompanies the ride through the Bollenstreek. As booking arrangements and seasonal operations may change, check in advance whether the ride is available on your visit date.

Museums, Art and Architectural History

Museum De Zwarte Tulp is dedicated to bulb cultivation and the art it has inspired. It is located in the center of Lisse in a former bulb barn. The museum also has a seasonal garden with bulbous plants. The focus here is on the history of cultivation and art; the garden complements these themes with a seasonal perspective on plants.

’t Huys Dever in Lisse is a medieval fortified residential tower, or donjon, built in the distinctive shape of the letter D. The art route “De schatkamer van Lisse” passes artworks in Lisse and tells you who created each work, when it was made and what material it is made from. As you walk the route, you can take in not only the artworks but also their creators, dates and materials.

The LAM at Keukenhof in Lisse is a food art museum with an internationally renowned collection. It offers visitors of all ages a personal, tailor-made art experience. This gives it a different focus from De Zwarte Tulp: while the latter brings together bulb cultivation and the art it has inspired, the LAM puts food art at the center.

Opening Hours and Tours

If fixed times shape your day, take note of the different visiting hours. ’t Huys Dever is open Wednesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 17:00. Keukenhof Estate is open daily from 08:30 to 19:30; admission to the estate and parking are free. Check these current opening details before you travel.

Kasteel Keukenhof offers 90-minute guided tours in Dutch by prior reservation: Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 and 15:30. If you are planning a tour, check the schedule in advance, as the official offering may change. This differs from a visit with a freely chosen time frame: the tour requires a reservation, lasts an hour and a half and is held in Dutch on the specified days and at the specified times.

Cycling Routes and Seasonal Experiences

In and around Lisse, an extensive cycling junction network lets you put together routes to suit your preferred distance and pace. The Haarlem Route starts in Lisse, goes via Hillegom and Bennebroek in the direction of Haarlem, then returns to Lisse via the wooded dunes. Check the route description and conditions before setting off. The network gives you the flexibility to plan your own route; the Haarlem Route, by contrast, is described as a specific circuit with named places and a return leg.

At Monique’s Pumpkin Factory, there is a flower-picking garden where you can put together a bouquet to suit your own taste. The garden is seasonal, and its opening period depends on the flowers being in bloom. If this experience is part of your plans, time your visit to coincide with the flowering season.
