Kaag is located on the Kagerplassen water sports area. Topics to consider when planning your trip include boating options, routes of varying lengths, nature watching and the history of the village.

Water and getting there

On Kaag, Botenverhuur Hoogenboom Kaag rents out, among other things, sloops, sailboats and motorboats. As the selection may change, it is best to check the current offering before making specific plans. The Kaag ferry runs around the clock between Kaag and Buitenkaag; also check the operator’s information before travelling.

The Fluisterboot KaagErvaaring is designed for guests with disabilities. Wheelchairs can be taken on and off board without difficulty.

Comparing walking routes

Kaag Toen & Nu is a circular route of less than 2 km along Julianalaan, which you can explore on foot or by bicycle. Along the way, it offers audio stories about the island. Groene Lusjes: Kaag is 3.3 km long and starts at Julianalaan 13a in Kaag. The 5 km Familie Wandelpad Kaag passes through Buitenkaag and the picturesque island of Kaag. It follows paved paths and is accessible to strollers, mobility scooters, rollators and wheelchairs. Along the route are, among other things, a water play feature, a birdwatching screen and an observation tower. Kaag Historisch Actief is 6 km long and starts at the Kaag ferry. The routes described therefore differ in length, starting point and path features.

Nature and seasonal conditions

There is a birdwatching point at the end of Irenelaan. The Black-tailed Godwit, Northern Shoveler, Northern Lapwing, Common Redshank and Eurasian Oystercatcher are the five most commonly mentioned bird species there. Near Kaag, the Lakerpolder is accessible year-round on the designated route, from sunrise to sunset. As access rules may change, check the current requirements before visiting.

The Laarzenpad Kaag is closed seasonally: it is inaccessible from 15 March to 15 July. If you plan to take this route, note the dates and check the conditions locally.

Village character and history

Kaag’s protected village conservation area includes the addresses Julianalaan 1 to 72; together, they form a curved strip about 800 metres long. The Protestantse Kerk te Kaag is a late Victorian hall church with a centrally positioned pulpit. It is a Rijksmonument because its interior includes copper lecterns, a holder for a baptismal font and two copper chandeliers from the 18th century.

Kaag is probably the oldest village centre in the municipality of Kaag en Braassem. Its name also points to an older landscape history: it probably derives from the word “kaghe,” meaning land outside the dikes, which is recorded as early as 1308.

Museum and local production

The Kaasmuseum of De Kaagse Boer on Kaageiland is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 from April to October; outside this season, visits are possible by appointment. Confirm the opening hours before your visit. De Kaagse Boer combines a farm and a cheese dairy on Kaag.
