Ouddorp – Beach, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Ouddorp
Ouddorp combines several kilometres of beach with natural and cultural attractions to suit a range of interests. Along the coast, you’ll find broad sandy stretches and views across the North Sea. There are also hiking trails, dune landscapes, a viewing tower and activities for active days. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, you can start by deciding whether the beach, a hike or a particular cultural attraction matters most to you.
Beach, Dunes and Hiking Trails
For a stay focused on the coast, Ouddorp’s beaches offer plenty of open sand and views of the North Sea; they stretch for several kilometres. Het Volgerland offers a different perspective on the landscape: the hiking route is five kilometres long, starts at the car park at the end of the Groene Dijk in Ouddorp and is marked with white arrows. Its varied dune landscape and rich birdlife are close to the beach, coastal dunes and inland dunes.
The Middelduinen viewing tower offers views of the transition from polder to dunes, the beach and De Kwade Hoek. The tower can be reached from the car park at the junction of Vrijheidsweg and Oosterweg near Ouddorp. This gives you a choice of different natural perspectives when planning your day: the expansive sandy stretches along the coast, the birdlife in the dunes and the view from the tower.
The De Kleistee nature area, with its woodland and flower fields, lies in the heart of Ouddorp. It is a remnant of a centuries-old landscape with sand ridges. Special flower species grow in the fields in spring and summer; the exact timing depends on conditions in any given year. De Punt is a 150-hectare dune area on the Grevelingen. It contains a bunker complex that was part of the Atlantic Wall during the Second World War. Along the route through De Punt, information panels explain the area’s flora, fauna and historical significance.
Culture and History
The De Hoop windmill was built in 1845 for J. Zoeter and D. Voogd, on the site of an earlier post mill. In the town hall, Museum Ouddorp presents information at around ten locations and/or in display cases; the ground floor also features an interactive touchscreen table. Beeldentuin Achter De Westduinen is a private garden in Ouddorp that brings together art, nature and history.
For a ride on a historic tram, the RTM Tram Museum route travels over the Brouwersdam and back; the journey takes about an hour. On operating days, the museum is open from 10:00 to 17:00, and there is a large car park at the entrance. As opening hours depend on operating days and timetables may change, check the information before your visit.
Activities and Local Amenities
If you enjoy mountain biking, there’s another way to experience the landscape: the Kop van Goeree MTB route passes through four Natuurmonumenten areas—De Kwade Hoek, Roggebos, bosje Havenhoofd and Scheelhoekbos. Ouddorp Duin has shops, a bicycle rental service, a restaurant, a theatre, an ice cream parlour, an indoor playground and a play landscape with dunes, among other amenities. Outdoor activities include archery, laser gaming, Archery Tag, wave surfing, power kiting and a pump track for scooters, skateboards or BMX bikes. Individual facilities may change, and the seasonal programme may also vary. So check in advance whether the activity you’re interested in is available on your visit date.
Another stop in town is Voogd’s mill shop, which stocks a wide range of flour, fine flour and complete baking mixes from its own mill. The selection may change. Overall, the experiences described range from coastal scenery and hiking to cycling, history and activities. This lets you focus on the things that matter to you when planning your trip to Ouddorp, then look for suitable hotels for your stay.
