Scheveningen by the Sea: Beach, Boulevard and Culture

Scheveningen combines a beach stretching for kilometres with a boulevard where strolls and various attractions are part of a seaside stay. The beach can be enjoyed all year round. You can walk along the boulevard from north to south throughout the year. From The Hague city centre, you can reach the boulevard by tram 1, 9 or 11 or by buses 21, 22 and 23; from the Kurhaus stop, it is a short walk. Check the routes before travelling, as transport information may change.

Beach, Boulevard and De Pier

At the boulevard, you can take a surfing lesson. De Pier offers a different highlight: the Ferris wheel above the sea is the first of its kind in the Netherlands. From there, you can enjoy views of the 11-kilometre-long beach and The Hague skyline. The zipline starts from a 55-metre-high tower, runs over the pier, across the sea and along the beach, reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h. Its operation may vary seasonally.

Boat Trips, a Hike and More Attractions

During the summer months, various operators, including Trip and Vrolijk, run North Sea sightseeing cruises from Scheveningen Harbour. The harbour is accessible by public transport, car and bicycle. It is worth checking the latest timetables for the cruises. If you prefer exploring on foot, you can complete the approximately 10-kilometre Wandel door Schevenings Groen hike in full or in three stages. This gives you the choice between one continuous route and dividing it into sections.

SEA LIFE Scheveningen showcases marine life from the North Sea, including starfish and sharks. The offering also includes a guided Behind the Scenes Tour. The LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Scheveningen is also located on the boulevard. This brings together a range of themes: marine life, a behind-the-scenes look and another named destination on the boulevard.

Art and History

Sprookjesbeelden aan Zee is a freely accessible sculpture terrace on the boulevard. It features 23 fairytale sculptures by artist Tom Otterness. A free tour through Bloomberg Connects lets you explore all the sculptures; digital visitor offerings may be updated. The terrace therefore combines a stroll along the boulevard with a collection of artworks to explore together.

Muzee is housed in a historic school building dating from 1877. Its collection covers fishing and everyday life in Scheveningen, past and present. Museum Beelden aan Zee offers a different focus and is devoted entirely to modern and contemporary sculpture. It is located in the dunes of The Hague, beneath the historic Paviljoen Von Wied, and offers views of the sea. Together, the two museums present different perspectives: Muzee focuses on life and fishing in Scheveningen, while Beelden aan Zee focuses on sculpture.

The Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel has been a memorial and museum since 2019. During the Second World War, Oranjehotel was the nickname for Scheveningen prison. The Internationaal Rosarium in Westbroekpark is a rose garden established in 1960. These destinations complement the coastal themes with history, remembrance and garden culture.
