Alphen Aan Den Rijn: Experience culture and nature
Accommodation in Alphen Aan Den Rijn
Culture and nature go hand in hand in Alphen aan den Rijn: at Museumpark Archeon, you can experience history, while routes and squares recall the Roman past. At Zegersloot Park, the focus is on exercise, water and nature. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests—from exploring historical themes to outdoor activities.
History in different formats
Museumpark Archeon brings history to life, from prehistoric times and the Roman era to the Middle Ages. There are different ways to engage with these themes. Visitors can paddle a genuine dugout canoe. At Archeon’s restoration shipyard, you can follow the restoration of six original Zwammerdam ships; guided tours include stops at “Zwammerdam 2” and an exhibition.
The ArcheoLab at Bibliotheek Rijn en Venen also explores the local Roman history. Visitors can work hands-on with archaeological finds from Roman Albaniana. Workshops include Roman recipes, as well as preparing and tasting Roman snacks together. As the programme may change, it is a good idea to check the current workshop dates before your visit.
Roman traces in the city and along the route
The “Op ontdekking door Albaniana” walking route passes through the centre of Alphen aan den Rijn, following traces of the Roman presence. On Rijnplein, large paving stones shaped like Roman coins recall the town’s history: their design is based on genuine coins excavated there. The square and walking route offer different ways to explore Roman traces in the urban landscape.
The 44-kilometre “Hollandse Limes” cycling route offers a different perspective. It starts at Archeon and follows the Oude Rijn, which formed the northern border of the Roman Empire 2,000 years ago. The focus here is on a longer cycling route whose course is connected to the historic frontier region. The walk through the town centre and the cycling route along the Oude Rijn are different ways to explore the Roman past.
Nature and activities at Zegersloot
Zegersloot Park is a 360-hectare recreation, nature and sports park. It includes a 70-hectare body of water. For a walk or bike ride, the well-known “rondje meer” loop offers a clear route: it is 4.1 kilometres long. The same park also has an underwater nature park with submerged wrecks and concrete reefs for divers. These underwater installations may change.
Two natural swimming spots in the Zegersloot area are officially designated. The municipality conducts regular safety checks; both the designation of swimming spots and water conditions may change. If you plan to swim there, check the latest conditions before your visit.
At Zegerplas, Wet ’n Wild The Social Club operates a wake park for waterskiing and wakeboarding. Operator and facility details may change; check the latest visitor information before making plans. Zegersloot offers a range of water activities: designated swimming spots, diving among underwater installations, and wakeboarding and waterskiing.
Animal encounters
At Avifauna Bird Park, you can see birds and small mammals up close. This adds another focus to the historical and water-based attractions. The animal collection may change over time.
When planning your trip, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: Archeon and the Roman themes offer different ways to explore history, while the routes and Zegersloot put outdoor activities centre stage. Avifauna adds animal encounters to the mix. With this focus in mind, you can then search and compare hotel options for your stay in Alphen aan den Rijn.
