When planning a trip, Rhoon brings together two clearly distinct themes: paths through polder and natural areas, and a historic center with a church, houses and a castle. There are also walking and cycling routes of varying lengths. If you are looking for a hotel in Rhoon, these highlights can help you decide whether the village suits your travel interests.

Nature and landscapes around Rhoon

The 13-hectare Kasteelgaarde Rhoon is a small, diverse country estate managed by Zuid-Hollands Landschap. Parts of the grounds are accessible with a stroller or wheelchair; the paths around the castle and in De Huijters are semi-paved. This information can help with planning if the condition of the paths is important for your visit.

The natural areas along the Oude Maas include Carnisse Grienden, Rhoonse Grienden and Klein Profijt: all three border the river. The “Langs de grienden” walking route starts at Rhoon metro station and passes through Rhoonse Grienden and Klein Profijt. This connects two of the areas mentioned along a specific route.

The landscape itself has its own distinctive features, too. The Struinpad in the Zegenpolder runs along a nature-friendly riverbank and offers views across the Zegenpolder; the Struinroute is about 2.5 kilometers long in total. At Driepolderpunt, a landscape painting stands where the Zegenpolder, Molenpolder and Portlandpolder meet.

Walking and cycling: route lengths and themes

The Groene Halte at Rhoon metro station opened in 2026. Six walking routes are directly accessible from there, leading to nearby nature and recreation areas. They are signposted or included in walking route networks and range from 7.5 to 20 kilometers in length. At the Groene Halte, the artist Han Goan Lim’s distinctive colored dots have been supplemented with texts and photos about plants and animals in the surrounding area.

For a shorter outing, the Boerenroute is a useful guide: it is 2.5 to 3 kilometers long and takes about 45 minutes. The similarly short Struinroute is around 2.5 kilometers in total. The Boerenroute passes special cultivation areas at De Buytenhof and Gert van Herk and provides information about the crops grown in the polder landscape. What grows there can vary by season.

Other routes have different focuses. The Vossenpad is part of the 12.5-kilometer Boerenwandeling through Buijtenland van Rhoon. The Buijtenroute is a 22.5-kilometer cycling tour through this area. Buijtenland van Rhoon is accessible from Rhoon metro station: it takes 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by bike. This makes it possible to distinguish short walks, longer hikes and a longer cycling tour by their stated distances and modes of transport.

Historic center and local heritage

Rhoon’s historic center includes a medieval church, grand houses and Kasteel van Rhoon. Another testament to the village’s history is the façade stone from the former De Meijlle school. It stands at the intersection of Kleidijk and Molendijk, near where the school stood for many years, and keeps alive the memory of the school and its importance to the village. The stone represents the former school building; its memory remains rooted in the village’s present-day streetscape.

Those interested in cultural history and visual art can also explore the historic walking and cycling route “Blik op Albrandswaard” (part 1 of 3). It starts in Rhoon and leads to places of cultural-historical or visual-art interest. At each stop, QR codes provide photos, texts, drawings, and audio or video information. This adds a range of media to the experience of the village and gives the route a different focus from a landscape-only tour.

Rhoon for your trip planning

The options differ not only in theme but also in route length and mode of transport: the Boerenroute and Struinroute are around 2.5 to 3 kilometers long, while the six routes starting at the Groene Halte range from 7.5 to 20 kilometers. For longer outings, there is the 12.5-kilometer Boerenwandeling and the 22.5-kilometer Buijtenroute cycling route. If you choose Rhoon as a travel destination, complement this perspective on its nature and landscapes with a visit to the historic center and its architectural landmarks.
