For your trip to Nutter, you can choose from a range of hiking options and cultural-historical themes. The routes range from the 3.0 km circular trail at Hazelbekke to the Springendal hike, which is just over 10 km long. If you are looking for a hotel in Nutter, you can plan your stay based on whether hiking or the cultural landscape is your priority.

Hiking: a circular trail or a longer route

The Tourist Info Ootmarsum is the starting point for the Springendal hike, which is just over 10 km long; the route passes through the hamlet of Nutter on its way to the Springendal nature reserve. It thus links a starting point in Ootmarsum with a route through Nutter and a destination in the Springendal nature reserve. This gives the hike a different format from a circular trail, and the two routes do not have the same length or purpose.

By contrast, the Green Route at Hazelbekke is a 3.0 km circular hiking trail in Nutter. Along the way, it crosses the Roezebeek twice; most of the route is on unpaved surfaces. Its length, circular format, stream crossings and trail surface offer specific points of reference if you are looking for a short hike with described landscape features.

Three routes, ranging from 5.3 to 8 km, are offered at the Nutter hiking trail starting point on Wittebergweg 9 in Oud-Ootmarsum. This puts them between the 3.0 km loop at Hazelbekke and the Springendal hike, which is just over 10 km long.

Hazelbekke and the landscape around Nutter

Eight hectares of former farmland in the Hazelbekke area have been rewetted. The Hazelbekke stream’s catchment area is also part of the Dal van de Mosbeek – Springendal Natura 2000 site.

Cultural landscape and historical traces

The hilly landscape of Nutter is a so-called marke. In the past, farmers joined together there and exercised their own jurisdiction. The term thus refers to a communal system that forms part of the traditional description of this landscape. If you are interested in the history of the area as well as hiking, this context offers a specific insight into how farmers were organised in the past.

The site at Helweg and Wittebergweg in Nutter is listed as a Rijksmonument (national monument); it was listed on 8 June 1977. The protected site includes two burial mounds dating from the Neolithic and/or Bronze Age. The mounds themselves and a 10-metre strip measured from their base are protected.

The Hazelbekke farmstead is large, attractively situated and includes half-timbered barns. It adds another cultural-historical feature to the archaeological traces and the historic marke. At the Bölte ice cream farm in Nutter, ice cream is made with pure, natural ingredients. As product details may change, check the current offering before planning a specific visit.
