Beuningen: Hiking, Nature and History
Accommodation in Beuningen
Explore Beuningen through its cultural landscape, hiking trails and the Dinkel. There are several ways to plan your trip: trails around the Hakenberg, nature discoveries and historic connections along the Belevingspad, or a themed cycling route to Marian chapels and wayside crosses. You can decide whether to spend your time hiking, discovering the Dinkel or taking a longer bike tour.
Landscape and hiking
Het Hakenberg combines an old agricultural cultural landscape with the distinctive style of an English landscape park. Meadows, farmland and woodland define the surroundings, which invite you to go hiking. The Hakenberg walk around Beuningen is 10 kilometers long and can be shortened to 7.5 kilometers. It follows a narrow path along the winding banks of the Dinkel. Several routes in the hiking trail network also start in Beuningen and pass through woods, along the Dinkel and through the rolling landscape of Twente. The choices therefore extend beyond the Hakenberg walk to include woodland, riverbanks and rolling countryside. Routes may change as the trail network develops; check the current route before planning your trip.
Nature experience along the Dinkel
The Belevingspad by the Dinkel in Beuningen offers a nature-focused discovery experience. It includes opportunities to discover birds, insects and plants, as well as activities at the Mauritsbrug and the cannon there. To help you explore, the experience provides a backpack with an activity book, measuring instruments and an identification card for aquatic animals. The materials and activity format may be adjusted by the provider, and the program's availability may also change. The Belevingspad starts at Tourist Info Beuningen, ’t Sterrebos, Beuningerstraat 71. Check the latest details about the start point and opening days in advance.
Historic connections and cycling route
The Mauritsbrug over the Dinkel is associated with Prince Maurits's attempt to cross the river with his troops during the Eighty Years' War. A cannon at the bridge commemorates this event. Activities at the bridge and the cannon are part of the Belevingspad, alongside the nature discoveries. Another historic connection is the parish of Beuningen, officially established on August 28, 1948, under the patronage of Onze Lieve Vrouw van Altijddurende Bijstand.
The 30-kilometer “Mariakapellen en Landkruisen” cycling route offers a different length of trip. It runs north of De Lutte through Beuningen and the Lutterzand, passing Marian chapels and wayside crosses. It differs from the hiking options both in its use of a bicycle and in its theme. The route and brochure may be updated; check the current route in advance.
