Daarle combines the landscape of an old esch village with traces of its local history. When planning your trip, it is worth considering both: the meadows, woods and bodies of water in the surrounding area, as well as the historic buildings and memorial sites. This way, you can choose the focus of your stay according to whether natural landscapes, local history or a combination of both better suits your interests.

The landscape around Daarle

Daarle is an old esch village with a high esch. Its varied surroundings include meadows, woods and bodies of water, as well as a hilly esch, small lakes, the Overijssels Canal and extensive pastureland. The landscape therefore includes open pastures alongside woodland and water. If you are considering Daarle as a destination, you will find several distinct landscape features rather than just one defining type.

A striking contrast is the Daarlesche Flier: this low-lying, marshy area contains isolated higher sand ridges. The description of these changes in elevation adds a different type of terrain to the picture of the high and hilly esch. When comparing destinations by landscape, this contrast is more useful than a general impression of rural surroundings. Pastureland, woods, bodies of water and the marshy Flier each represent different aspects of the area.

Routes and poems

Two different ways of travelling feature among the routes. The approximately 80-kilometre Hellendoorn driving route passes through Daarle’s fields. The 83.4-kilometre Gedichten Fietsroute is associated with Daarle and is one of the walking and cycling routes mentioned there. It connects village centres and hamlets in the municipality of Hellendoorn; the poems along the route were written by 15 local poets.

The distances are similar, but refer to different types of routes: the driving route passes through Daarle’s fields, while the Gedichten Fietsroute connects village centres and hamlets and features local poetry. This lets you choose between a driving route and a culture-themed cycling route when planning. Check the latest route information before setting out.

Local history and memorial sites

The water tower at Watertorenweg 17 is listed as a protected monument in the municipality of Hellendoorn’s heritage register. The Daarle baptismal font is a Romanesque font made of Bentheim sandstone, dating from around 1200. It stood at Erve Janshuis in Daarle until 1927. The information about the font combines details of its material and date with a specific historic location.

The local church history also follows a clear timeline: the Water Board Church on Groeneweg was completed in 1854 and replaced by the present church in 1955. Albert Ensing is commemorated in Daarle by a small chapel; the chapel’s stained-glass window is a memorial window designed by his niece. There is also a memorial to Albert Ensing in the cemetery. The local history is therefore centred on both church heritage and memorial sites.

Village festivals and culture

Daarle hosts sociable village festivals and cultural events for all ages. If you would like to include a particular festival in your trip, check the date before you arrive. This will help you plan your travel dates around the event that interests you most.
