Diepenveen can be explored through a range of interests: the Dorpskerk points to a monastic past, Laage Diepenveen to land art, and several routes to walking and cycling. Other options include the coffee house at Klooster Nieuw Sion, as well as opportunities for fishing and canoeing. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Diepenveen, you can first consider whether history, a walk or activities on the water will be the deciding factor in your travel plans.

The Dorpskerk and Monastic History

The Dorpskerk Diepenveen stands on Kerkplein, on the site of a former convent. The convent was founded in 1400 in the context of the Modern Devotion movement. The church was restored in 1720 and subsequently used as a Protestant church. The two dates mark different milestones: 1400 refers to the founding of the convent, while 1720 refers to the restoration of the church. This makes it possible to distinguish the monastic past from the later Protestant use as separate historical periods.

Coffee House and Getting There

The coffee house at Klooster Nieuw Sion is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours before you set off. RRReis bus route 165 runs between Deventer and Raalte stations and stops at “Klooster Nieuw Sion”. From there, it is about a ten-minute walk along the access road to the monastery. You should also check the timetable for your travel date.

Land Art and Routes

Laage Diepenveen is a two-hectare land art project designed by Jeroen van Westen. The waterways and walking paths each form their own labyrinth; a fountain is located at the centre of the site. The double labyrinth structure thus distinguishes the waterways and paths as two separate elements of the site.

The Laage Diepenveen walking route starts in the centre of Diepenveen at Kulturhus Diepenveen, Dorpsstraat 30a, and follows the green arrows of the walking network. Along the way, it passes the site where the Diepenveen meteorite was found. A named starting point, an address and the green markers are therefore useful for navigation; the meteorite discovery site is an additional landmark along the route. The Randerpad is an old church path that led from Olst to the church in Diepenveen. It offers a different historical route connection from the Laage Diepenveen walking route.

Walking, Cycling and Water

Several walking routes are signposted in Diepenveen’s different woodland areas, and several cycling routes pass through the village. When planning, you can distinguish between walking routes in the woodland areas and cycling routes through the village.

The Zandwetering has been adapted for canoeing. Fishing is possible around Diepenveen in the Zandwetering, as well as in various pools and former river bends in and near the IJssel’s riverside floodplains. The Zandwetering is the place to go canoeing; fishing is also possible in several other types of water. These distinctions help you identify where each of the water activities mentioned is available.
