Zandvoort: Beach, Dunes and Culture
Accommodation in Zandvoort
Zandvoort offers a range of options for a stay: the long beach, dune landscapes, cultural history and leisure activities from water sports to motorsports. If you are looking for a hotel, the purpose of your trip can help you decide where to focus. Would you like to spend time at the beach, plan a seasonal hike, or focus on museums and local history? Opening hours and the season may also play a role when planning your activities.
Beach and Dune Landscape
Zandvoort’s beach is 9 kilometers long and 100 meters wide. The train station is about 200 meters from the beach. These measurements give you a concrete sense of the coastline and an idea of the distance between the station and the beach. If you would like to combine your stay with time by the sea, you can make beach visits one possible focus without assuming a particular accommodation location.
The dunes also shape the surroundings of Circuit Zandvoort. The race track is 4.3 kilometers long; its fast, challenging turns are shaped by the natural dunes. There is a mountain bike trail in the dune area next to the circuit. The dunes around the circuit are also suitable for hiking. This area therefore offers a range of interests side by side: motorsports, mountain biking and hiking, each with its own character.
Kraansvlak lies between Zandvoort and Bloemendaal and includes both protected areas and zones for recreation. The yellow Wisentenpad trail starts there at Duinpieperpad. The hiking trail is about 3 kilometers long and is open from September to March. If you plan to visit during your trip, take this seasonal window into account. Kraansvlak’s different zones are also important to bear in mind: protected areas and recreational zones are not the same.
Museums and Zandvoort’s History
The Zandvoorts Museum presents exhibitions of both contemporary and historical art. Its program also includes lectures and guided tours about Zandvoort’s heritage. A museum visit can therefore combine art with the history of the town. Open Monumentendagen Zandvoort is organized annually to bring the stories of old Zandvoort to life. As the program and dates vary from year to year, it is worth checking the event dates if you would like to make this visit a fixed part of your trip.
The Juttersmu-ZEE-um is dedicated to objects found on the beach. Admission is free; the museum is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 13:00 to 17:00. Exceptions apply on public holidays, so check the opening times in advance for your planned visit. The museum is housed in a building that once served as a police station. The building’s former use and the collection of objects found on the beach offer two distinct points of interest: the history of the building and the objects collected along the shore.
A historical route can also be part of your exploration of the region: a large part of the route along which fishermen’s wives walked to Haarlem can still be covered on foot or by bicycle today. This connects a walk or bike ride with a historic link between the towns. For planning purposes, the main thing to note is that much of the route can still be covered this way.
Planning Activities and Dates
Watersportcentrum The Spot offers surfing, stand-up paddleboarding and kitesurfing lessons with certified instructors, and rents water sports equipment. It operates seasonally; the availability of lessons and rental equipment may also vary by season. If you have a particular activity or piece of equipment in mind, check its availability for your travel dates. These water sports offerings differ from year-round destinations such as the weekly market.
Zandvoort’s weekly market takes place year-round every Wednesday from 09:00 to 16:00 on the Grote Krocht. It offers, among other things, fresh fruit and vegetables, artisan cheese and freshly baked bread. As the schedule may change, it is worth checking shortly before your arrival. You can reserve a tee time for a round at The Dunes golf course; include the reservation in your plans.
At Circuit Zandvoort, Racesquare is a sim racing center for all ages. This offers another distinct leisure activity alongside the race track and the mountain bike trail in the neighboring dune area. The activities differ not only in type but also in the planning they require: the weekly market depends on the day of the week, the Wisentenpad on the season, a round of golf on a reserved tee time, and The Spot on seasonal availability.
