The Zaanse Schans illustrates 18th- and 19th-century Holland: wooden houses, windmills, barns and workshops form a heritage ensemble. The grounds are freely accessible for walks; you can stroll past historic houses, windmills and other heritage sites at no charge. Possible experiences include seeing a sawmill in operation, watching a weaver at work and making chocolate yourself. Individual demonstrations may vary, so it is worth checking what is currently available before your visit.

History in Houses and Museums

The Zaans Museum opened at the Zaanse Schans in 1998 to preserve and protect the heritage of the Zaanstreek. As a cultural history museum, it is dedicated to the region, which it presents as Western Europe’s oldest industrial area and a historic centre of international trade and industry. The Czaar Peterhuisje is one of the oldest wooden houses in the Netherlands. Keepsakes in the house include a death mask of Tsar Peter, a bust of Anna Pavlovna, and portraits of Tsar Peter and Catherine I. For group visits and guided tours of the Czaar Peterhuisje, you can contact the Zaans Museum’s sales department; it is best to check the options in advance.

In Zaandijk, the Honig Breethuis is a former manufacturer’s residence offering guided tours of its historic home. The reconstruction shows the house as it was between 1826 and 1847. After the tour, you can enjoy tea or coffee in the Zaankamer room and take in the views of the Zaan and the garden. The Verkade Experience brings an early 20th-century biscuit and chocolate factory to life; the original machines are still in operation. Hands-on activities include role-playing factory jobs and the chance to design your own chocolate packaging. These activities may depend on the packages available on site.

Industrial History and Culture at Hembrugterrein

The former military industrial site of Hembrugterrein in Zaandam combines monumental factory buildings, rugged nature and creative businesses. Today, the site is open to visitors and offers museums, art, culture, dining and special events; individual offerings may change. The Hembrug Museum tells the story of the weapons and ammunition factory on the site. The headquarters of the Museum of Humanity is also located there, organizing exhibitions, workshops and Happy Art projects. Cars, bicycles, the community bus and the Hempont ferry are listed as ways to reach Hembrugterrein. As transport services may change, check connections before travelling.

The De Fabriek cinema also offers something different: it has three screening rooms along the Zaan and hosts introductions, post-screening discussions or panel discussions every month. If you would like to discover other sides of the area alongside its industrial heritage, the Heemtuin in Zaandam is home to a rich variety of native flora and fauna. Winding paths, a pond, an apiary and an aquarium shape this nature garden.

Windmills, Routes and Getting Around

The Molenmuseum features an interactive model of 1,100 windmills in the Zaanstreek, as well as a multimedia exhibition on the history of windmills. It is located right on Kalverringdijk and is easy to reach on foot or by bicycle. There are routes to suit different walks and landscapes: a six-kilometre route leads from the Zaanse Schans to Haaldersbroek. A 3.5-kilometre walk passes through the protected village vista of Gortershoek and the authentic De Domineestuin neighbourhood. Another five-kilometre route follows the water of the Zaan as closely as possible. Routes may change; check the latest information before setting off.

For rail travel, the Zaanstreek has six railway stations. Zaandam and Zaandijk-Zaanse Schans are among them and provide access to key visitor areas; check current connections before travelling. A fast cycling route connects Amsterdam with Zaanstad in about 15 minutes. Actual travel time depends on the route and conditions. You can plan your trip around the places that interest you most—from historic houses and windmills to museums, culture and nature.
