De Kwakel brings together a range of attractions: the fort, puzzle activities, the Kwakelse Kermis fair and a circular walking route. You can plan your trip around your interest in the history of the Stelling van Amsterdam, scavenger hunts, an event or a walking route. These differences can also help with planning: an approximate walking time is given for the Fortenpad, activities at Poldersport are available only by advance reservation, and the play hill “De ruïne van Steenwyck” is accessible only with a ticket to the Bamboelabyrint.

Fort bij de Kwakel: Escape Room and Historical Details

Fort bij de Kwakel offers the Fort K escape room. There are also specific architectural details that show another side of the site: in the green rampart surrounding the fort is a concrete gun emplacement, a battery oriented toward the road to Vrouwenakker. Its location in the rampart, construction material and orientation are the key features of this emplacement.

The water iron-removal installation also points to a technical function of the fort. It was used to make groundwater drinkable. This brings together two distinct aspects: the gun emplacement as part of the defensive works and water treatment. If you are interested in history, the escape room offers a different thematic experience from these architectural and technical details.

Puzzles and Play at Bamboelabyrint Nirwana

The Bamboelabyrint Nirwana maze covers 2,500 m². Alongside its size, the different types of activities can help you decide: there is a picture hunt, a riddle trail based on sayings, and a multiple-choice hunt, each at different levels. The three formats focus on pictures, sayings and multiple-choice questions, respectively.

The play hill “De ruïne van Steenwyck” is accessible only with a ticket to the Bamboelabyrint. So if you plan to visit the play hill, take this ticket requirement into account and check the current conditions before your visit. This makes clear that access to the hill is conditional on admission to the maze.

Kwakelse Kermis: History and Floats

The Kwakelse Kermis began in the first half of the 19th century as a harvest festival. Its origins included the cultivation of vegetables and flowers, as well as peat production. This connection with the work of the time gives the tradition a different historical focus from the fort.

The children's parade was first held in 1898 and has taken place every year since, with exceptions such as during the Second World War. At the fair, floats depict current events, history, and themes from television shows and films. Slogans, sets and costumes are among the forms of expression used. If you want to plan your trip around the fair, check the specific event dates in advance.

Fortenpad, Vuurlijn and Poldersport

The Fortenpad is an 8 km circular walking route that takes about two hours to walk. Its scenic and historical highlights include the reused forts on the Drecht and near De Kwakel. Both are part of the Stelling van Amsterdam. The approximate walking time provides a useful guide for planning, without implying that the route takes a fixed amount of time. The Vuurlijn is also part of the Stelling van Amsterdam.

Activities at Poldersport have a different planning requirement: they are available only by advance reservation. Make sure to include a reservation in your preparations and check the details before you travel. The circular walking route, fair, puzzle activities and activities that require reservations offer different ways to spend your stay; plan according to which of these themes matters most to your trip.
