Schagen offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: a historic urban farm, buildings from different eras, West Frisian Folklore, and walking and canoe routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Schagen, you can choose based on which of these aspects you would like to explore. The themes range from the museum in the old center to routes around Schagen and a canoe route through the town.

Cultural history in distinctive buildings

In the old center is the Boerderij-en Rijtuigmuseum Vreeburg, a 17th-century urban farm fully restored in the old style, with a carriage museum. Today, the farm is a local history museum and offers an impression of what life and homes were like around 1900. Vreeburg thus brings together two periods: the farm’s origins in the 17th century and the everyday world depicted around 1900. This makes it an interesting place for travelers who want to understand cultural history not only through impressive buildings, but also through earlier living conditions and ways of life.

The Grote Kerk adds architectural history to this perspective. Built between 1895 and 1897 to a design by J.A.G. van der Steur, it is in the Neo-Gothic style and is a rare example of this architectural style in a Protestant church. The Sint-Christoforus Church was consecrated on Sunday, October 21, 1883, by mgr. C.J.M. Bottemanne, Bishop of Haarlem. The two churches offer different historical points of reference: for the Grote Kerk, the architect and style are connected to its construction period; for the Sint-Christoforus Church, it is the specific consecration ceremony.

Slot Schagen is also among the town’s historical highlights. Around 1440, the first Lord of Schagen had an existing stone house converted into a square moated castle. The “Door het gezellige Schagen” route passes the rebuilt Slot and numerous historic buildings. Slot Schagen can also be booked as an overnight stay, with breakfast served at the table. If you are considering this type of accommodation, check availability for your travel dates.

West Frisian Folklore in summer

West Frisian Folklore reveals another side of Schagen. During the summer months, a procession featuring historic vehicles and people from Schagen in traditional West Frisian dress passes through the center on ten consecutive Thursdays. At the Folklore Market, typical West Frisian products are sold along the Gedempte Gracht and in the Nieuwstraat. The procession and market give the tradition different forms: the procession passes through the center, while market stalls can be found on two named streets. If the folklore is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates in advance.

Walking routes with different highlights

Different themes take center stage on the walking routes. The “Bloemenvelden route” runs around Schagen past grassland and flower fields; during the flowering season, the scenery is colorful. The “Door het gezellige Schagen” route passes through Schagen, past numerous historic buildings and the rebuilt Slot Schagen. By contrast, “Wandelen door Schagen” follows the Schagervaart to Tolke. You can choose whether to focus your walk on fields and seasonal blooms, historic buildings in town, or the Schagervaart, with Tolke as your destination.

Schagen on foot and on the water

You can also explore Schagen on the water: the “Kanoroute Schagen” lets you canoe through Schagen. Several launch points make a circular route possible, so you can choose between different starting points. The route offers views of nature. As a reference point for the town center, the Recreatiehaven Schagen is about a 500-meter walk from the center. When choosing a route, you can therefore decide between a canoe trip with the option of a circular route and walking routes featuring fields, historic buildings, or Tolke as a destination.
