Ouderkerk aan de Amstel combines Jewish history, historic architecture and stories of the Amstelland landscape. If you are looking for hotels for a stay in the village, these highlights can help you choose a destination that suits your interests. The history of the village dates back to Ouderkerk’s role as an administrative centre; the cemetery, museum and historic walking routes also offer concrete starting points for planning your visit.

Ouderkerk as a historic place

Until the 14th century, Ouderkerk was the administrative centre of Amstelland. The Historisch Kwartier forms the heart of the protected villagescape and is one of the oldest places in the region. Another date in the village’s history is marked by the war memorial at Dorpsstraat 14, which was unveiled on 4 May 1951. Together, these sites offer a glimpse into different periods in the village’s history, from its former administrative role to the commemoration of those who died in the war.

Beth Haim: Jewish history and visiting

The land for Beth Haim was acquired in 1614, and the cemetery officially opened in 1616. The Portuguese-Israelite Congregation of Amsterdam continues to use it. The cemetery covers four hectares and contains around 28,000 graves. Beth Haim is listed as a Rijksmonument under number 31967. These key facts reflect both the site’s long history and its significance to the congregation.

Beth Haim is open to visitors free of charge throughout the year. You can visit independently; guided tours can be booked by appointment. A historic tour traces four centuries of Jewish history. Paths, stairs and bridges make the entire cemetery accessible. The visitor app complements the tour with the “Rabbijnen route” and “Koopliedenroute” routes, as well as 76 stories linked to graves or places in the cemetery. You can choose between exploring at your own pace and taking a guided tour by appointment.

Church, museum and water management

The Sint Urbanuskerk stands in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel near the confluence of the Bullewijk and the Amstel. The well-preserved Neo-Gothic church dates from the third quarter of the 19th century and is a characteristic example of the early work of architect P.J.H. Cuypers. The Rodeamentoshuis, built in 1705, is also located on the Bullewijk. In this house, bereaved relatives walk seven circuits around the deceased’s coffin.

The Amstelland Museum is housed in six former deaconry houses dating from 1733. Its permanent exhibition explores the history of Ouder-Amstel; check the exhibition details before your trip. An interactive station demonstrates water management: visitors can pump water out themselves, and the water level rises again as soon as they stop. This activity illustrates the symbolic connection with water management.

The history of the landscape is also connected to water management. De Zwaan windmill once maintained the water level in the 356-hectare Klein-Duivendrechtse and Binnenbullewijkerpolder. This offers a different way to explore the area from its church and cemetery history, focusing on the former function of a windmill in relation to a large polder.

Walks and surroundings

The “Historische Wandelingen” comprise three signposted walks in the village and just outside Ouderkerk. For a cycling trip, the “Rondje groen Amstelland” route starts at the Kerkbrug over the Bullewijk, from where you can enjoy a view of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. Check route conditions before setting out.

Near Ouderkerk, the Ouderkerkerplas recreation area offers beaches, a day campsite, a nature area, an equestrian route, and several walking and cycling paths. Water activities are available via a boat ramp and waterside areas for surfing, canoeing, small-boat sailing and diving. Check water access and seasonal restrictions before your visit, especially if you are planning any of these activities.
