Nieuwe Niedorp – History, Water and Floralia
Accommodation in Nieuwe Niedorp
Nieuwe Niedorp is surrounded by green spaces and water and lies along the Doortraproute Niedorp. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: local history and the museum, Floralia around mid-September, or water activities. Check the route conditions before setting out and the Floralia dates for your intended year of travel.
History and Remembrance
The former town hall was built in 1866 to a design by architect Arnoldus Teunis van Wijngaarden. In 1975, it was converted into a village community centre named “Prins Maurits”. It is a well-preserved example of a town hall built in the neoclassical style in the second half of the 19th century.
The war memorial and gravestone in Nieuwe Niedorp commemorate a Jewish girl. A collection of 23 gravestones is set on an artificial mound; the stones are arranged at an angle so they can be viewed easily. The collection was designated a national monument (Rijksmonument) in 1973.
Westermolen also tells the story of the history of buildings and their functions: it was built in 1854 to drain the Oostpolder and completely renovated between 1975 and 1978. The town hall and the mill thus represent different historical themes—the development of a public building and the drainage of the polder.
Garden and Museum
Park de Meet includes a 2,000 m² butterfly garden with 2,700 trees, shrubs, woody plants and perennials. The planting may change over time. The figures for the area and plant collection give garden enthusiasts a concrete idea of the site’s size and variety.
More than 300 motorcycles are on display at the Grootmoederstijd en Motorenmuseum. The museum also features authentic shops from an earlier era and a 1950s cobbler’s workshop. Vehicles are thus presented alongside glimpses of former shops and the craft of shoemaking. The collection may change over time.
Floralia and Water Activities
Floralia takes place in Nieuwe Niedorp every year over a weekend around mid-September. The event includes dahlia mosaics, street theatre and music; programme details may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates for the relevant year.
