Hoorn: City History, Harbor and Markermeer
Accommodation in Hoorn
When looking for a hotel in Hoorn, you can start by deciding which themes you want your stay to focus on: historic streets and buildings, museums or experiences on the water. Hoorn brings together city and beach on the Markermeer; its historic city center, harbor and cultural attractions each offer a different perspective. Consider whether you are most interested in Hoorn’s history, an exhibition, or views of the water and ships.
Historic City Center and Oosterpoort
Hoorn’s historic city center is designated as a protected townscape, and visitors can stroll through its streets. The Oosterpoort is Hoorn’s only surviving city gate; it was built in 1578. The city’s rich history is also reflected in numerous monuments and archaeological sites. These references differ in scale: the designation applies to the townscape, while the Oosterpoort is one surviving gate, and the monuments and archaeological sites offer a broader picture of the past. If you want to explore Hoorn on foot, take a walk through the historic city center; the city gate and the many traces of the past provide different points of interest along the way.
Museums and Trips from Tramstation Hoorn
The Museum van de 20e Eeuw is dedicated to life in the past century and presents it through hundreds of objects and dozens of interior settings. Objects and rooms offer two different ways to explore the same subject: you can look at everyday life through individual objects as well as interior settings. The museum is housed in a former prison on Oostereiland, in Hoorn’s harbor. This brings the exhibition’s focus on the past century alongside the building’s former use.
At Tramstation Hoorn, visitors can see the De Tijdlijn exhibition, a working signal box and the SpoorTuin. A ride on the Museumstoomtram also begins and ends here: the round trip from Hoorn to Medemblik starts and finishes at Tramstation Hoorn. Medemblik is the destination, and the ride returns to its starting point in Hoorn. A visit to Tramstation Hoorn and the trip between the two towns therefore offer different points of interest.
The “Ontdek het verhaal van Hoorn” experience combines a multimedia show at the Statenpoort with a podwalk through the historic city center or along Hoorn’s harbor. The podwalk therefore offers two different routes: through the city center or around the harbor. Check the current schedule before your visit, as dates may change.
Harbor, Markermeer and Beach
At the inner harbor, you can experience Hoorn from its terraces or by taking a walk along the quays. You can sail past large ships on Hoorn’s canals; from the Markermeer, you get a special view of the city. These perspectives from the water are different: a canal trip takes you past large ships, while the view from the Markermeer shows Hoorn from another direction. Hoorn lies on the Markermeer and brings together city and beach.
At Stadsstrand Hoorn, visitors can play, relax or take part in sports. The waterfront options range from a trip on the canals to a visit to the inner harbor and activities at the beach. When planning your trip, consider whether you would rather be out on the water, enjoy the harbor’s quays and terraces, or spend time at Stadsstrand. Together with its museums and historic city center, Hoorn offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay, each with a different focus.
