Diemen offers plenty of reasons to explore the surrounding area: natural landscapes and trails sit alongside historic buildings and memorial sites. If you’re looking for a hotel in Diemen, you can first consider whether you’d prefer to focus on the landscape and outdoor activities or on culture and history. The destinations below give you an overview of these different sides of the area.

Natural areas and landscapes around Diemen

Diemerbos is a natural area between Diemen, Weesp and Amsterdam-Zuidoost. A walking route leads through the young, water-rich forest and the Banjerbossie play forest. The red Rondje Diemerbos passes picnic areas, a children’s play forest, bodies of water and a large sunbathing lawn. The two descriptions emphasize different features: the walking route focuses on the forest and play forest, while the Rondje highlights the recreational areas and bodies of water mentioned above.

Diemer Vijfhoek, also known as PEN-eiland, is an artificial peninsula in the IJmeer beside the power station in Over-Diemen. The area is managed by Staatsbosbeheer and is also part of the natural corridor along the IJmeer. On the other side of the A9, the area around Diemerbos includes further natural landscapes with swamp forest, wet grassland, ponds and reed beds. These landscapes complement the impressions of the water-rich forest without being the same as it.

The Overdiemen recreation area is also nearby. There are opportunities to walk and cycle along the Diem; the landscape includes green spaces, farms and reed beds by the water. If you’re interested in a distinctive natural play area, De Omloop nature park offers opportunities to jump over ditches, ride a raft and use a zip line.

Choose routes by activity

For a cycling trip, Rondje Diemerscheg is another option besides the walking route through Diemerbos: the cycling route is about 30 kilometres long and passes through green landscapes, along picturesque dikes and by historic highlights. This lets you choose your route according to your preferred activity: the walking route described here is defined by forest and play forest, while Rondje Diemerscheg combines its landscapes and dikes with historic stops.

Churches, fortifications and historic traces

Fort Diemerdam is part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, which is protected as a UNESCO monument. Schuilkerk De Hoop is also a special testament to regional history: it is the only surviving rural hidden church in the Amsterdam area. Today, De Hoop is used as a cultural centre, as well as a wedding venue, concert hall and space for other gatherings. Its distinctive architectural sense of space has been preserved. The present-day Sint Petrus Banden church was built in 1910, after De Hoop had become too small.

Stammermolen is the surviving mill stump of Gemeenschapsmolen 2, an octagonal windmill built in 1875. Another historic trace is the cast-iron Grenspaal: since 1896, it has marked the former municipal boundary between Amsterdam and Diemen. Since 1998, it has been listed on the Dutch Rijksmonumenten register. The two sites represent different forms of built heritage—a remnant of a windmill and a boundary marker that preserves its former function.

The Holocaust monument in Diemen commemorates Jewish residents of the municipality who were murdered during the Second World War and have no grave. A plaque lists their names. It is therefore a place of remembrance that, alongside older buildings and boundary markers, reveals another important dimension of the area’s history.

Plan your visit and connections

The Saan Museum displays historic cars and cranes, interactive screens about the company’s history, and quiz and game features. It opens to visitors several times a year. Groups can visit the museum by arrangement on weekend days outside its scheduled opening days. Check the visiting dates before your trip; group visits must be arranged in advance.

Diemen has metro, bus and tram connections, including Amsterdam metro line 53 and tram line 19. From Diemen Zuid station, there are direct connections to Schiphol, The Hague, Lelystad and Hilversum. If one of these connections is important for your trip, check the current routes and services before travelling. This lets you coordinate your choice of accommodation with your planned visits and the destinations that matter to you.
