If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Elsloo, you can shape your trip around the places and trails in the area. The protected historic townscape, the IVN Elsloo Botanical Garden, Kasteelpark and cultural attractions each offer a different focus. The routes also provide specific guidance: they differ in length, signage and theme, among other things.

Historic Town Centre and the History of the Meuse

Elsloo’s protected historic townscape is characterised by narrow, cobbled streets and Meuse-region houses. Architectural details include decorative brick bands and window surrounds made of hardstone or timber framing. Old streets lead to the Meuse. The original medieval castle of Elsloo now lies in the bed of the Meuse—a distinct aspect of the town’s history, separate from its surviving streets and houses.

Garden, Park and Bunderbos

The IVN Elsloo Botanical Garden lies beside the tower of Kasteel Elsloo. It covers about one hectare and contains numerous themed gardens as well as a new arboretum. The garden therefore offers several different areas within a manageable space. To the south, Kasteelpark Elsloo joins the Bunderbos and can be explored via a network of walking trails. The garden and park offer different ways to experience nature: the garden focuses on its themed gardens and arboretum, while the park features its trails and the transition into the forest.

Museum and Information at the Historiehuis

At the Historiehuis van de Maasvallei, you can visit the local history museum, a 1950s kitchen, a nostalgic village shop, old houses and the Maasvallei information and knowledge centre. Its subjects range from everyday history to information about the Maasvallei. The Historiehuis is also an official information centre for the recognised Rivierpark Maasvallei landscape park. Cycling and walking maps for the area are sold there—useful if you are planning excursions by bike or on foot.

Choose Routes and Activities

The Gedichtenroute (Poetry Route) around Elsloo is 6.5 kilometres long. It was created from an idea by Jack Jacobs, whose poems are inspired by the area’s historic diversity and natural environment. Another route is nine kilometres long and marked with blue posts. It passes Kasteel Elsloo, De Fontein Brewery, the Streekmuseum Elsloo (Schipperbeurs), Elsloo’s historic town centre and the ruins of Stein. The routes differ in length by 2.5 kilometres; the second route is also described by its signage and the destinations it passes. When planning, you can therefore take both the distance and the focus of each route into account.

In the “De Sleutel van Elsloo” activity, participants solve five puzzles that lead to the code for a safe containing the key to Elsloo. They can then see the key with their own eyes and hold it in their hands. Check the booking details before your visit. This activity complements visits to the town centre and the Historiehuis with its own puzzle-based format.
