Simpelveld combines railway history with museums, religious art and routes through the landscape of Zuid-Limburg. When choosing your destination, you can decide whether you are particularly interested in historical collections, a nostalgic train ride or paths with Roman connections. The differences between the routes can also help with planning: length, approximate duration and difficulty are relevant wherever they are specified for a particular route.

Railway history and routes around Simpelveld

The old station building at Station Simpelveld dates from 1908 and is the centrepiece of the De Miljoenenlijn heritage railway. From Station Simpelveld, the Miljoenenlijn offers a nostalgic train ride through the hills of Zuid-Limburg. For anyone looking to combine rail travel with cycling or walking routes, it is also a notable landmark in the route network: the approximately 34-kilometre Parkstadroute runs between Beekdaelen and Simpelveld, ends at the railway site and connects the regional route network with Germany’s Vennbahn and Belgium’s Kolenspoor.

Another cycling route connected with the region is called “Romeins Simpelveld en Voerendaal”. It starts at the Miljoenenlijn car park between cycling junctions 88 and 89. The route uses a junction system that makes it easier to find your way. Simpelveld also has a network of walking and cycling routes where you can choose your own route and distance. This means that, alongside a longer route covering several local areas, there are also options for putting together your own itinerary.

Museums, church and milling history

Museum de Schat van Simpelveld is housed in the stately Huize Loreto monastery. Its collection includes exquisite 19th- and 20th-century embroideries, known as needle painting, as well as paintings, gold chalices, wax figures and medieval sculptures. The collection spans textile art alongside religious and historical objects. The Sint Remigiuskerk also offers a distinctive architectural landmark: it is a three-aisled cruciform basilica with a west tower; its traditionalist forms show Romanesque influence.

The church interior includes a communion rail, a 19th-century pulpit and an 18th-century organ gallery. The gallery rests on columns made of Naamer stone. There are also two 19th-century confessionals. The dates distinguish the furnishings: while the pulpit and confessionals date from the 19th century, the organ gallery is from the 18th century.

West of Simpelveld lies the Oude Molen, a former watermill whose origins date back to 1774. Its five-metre waterwheel is still in place in a covered extension of the mill house. The surviving wheel illustrates the mill’s technical aspects, while the building’s historical context points to its former function.

Walking with Roman connections and views across the countryside

The “Romeinse hoogtepunten in Simpelveld” walking route passes the archaeological site of the Lady of Simpelveld, one of the most significant Roman finds in the Netherlands. The route is 8.4 kilometres long and takes approximately two hours. After a strenuous climb, you reach a viewpoint overlooking fields that the Romans developed extensively for agriculture. The route thus links an archaeological site with a landscape whose history can also be seen in the view across the fields.

The “Plateau Huls Simpelveld” route is rated difficult. Together with the approximate duration and length of the “Romeinse hoogtepunten in Simpelveld” route, this gives you a useful distinction between two stated features: for one route, the time and distance are highlighted; for the other, the difficulty rating. Which information matters most to you depends on how you plan your walking day.

Loreto Monastery and the Land van Kalk landscape

Behind Loreto Monastery is a wooded hillside with a Lourdes grotto, a ruined chapel, fourteen Stations of the Cross and a well-maintained cemetery for the monastery’s sisters. The site can be reached via Rodeput and the Hoogenberg footpath. After 200 metres, you reach a gate; a path from there leads to the grotto, chapel and Stations of the Cross. The directions explain how to reach these religious sites, while the other features mentioned describe the character of the wooded hillside and its surroundings.

The Land van Kalk also offers a regional connection with nature: it stretches from Aachen through Simpelveld to Voerendaal and provides a habitat for distinctive plants and animals. When making your choice, you can weigh up different priorities: railway heritage and collections, Roman history along a walking route, or the natural and cultural features around Loreto.
