Herkenbosch lies on the edge of the De Meinweg nature reserve. Nature, golf and history each add their own character to a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Herkenbosch, you might first consider whether heathland and woodland, a route or historic sites will shape your travel plans.

Nature, Trails and Landscape

De Meinweg is a terraced landscape of heathland, streams, bogs and forests rich in wildlife. This variety alone gives the natural area its character: waterways, open heathland and forest alternate as landscape features. One specific way to explore parts of it is the Ruiterroute Meinweg Oost. It starts at Paardenpension Jägerhof in Herkenbosch and passes through the eastern part of Nationaal Park De Meinweg, past heathland, forests and small bodies of water. The route is more than 21 kilometres long—a useful detail when deciding whether to include this tour in your plans.

The Brandwandeling passes over heathland and through forest in Nationaal Park De Meinweg. Clear traces of the April 2020 fire are still visible along the way. This makes the route’s landscape a reminder of a specific event from recent history. The Fietsroute Meinweg en Roerdal, by contrast, focuses on the fast-flowing Roer: the route follows the river, which is home to beavers and kingfishers. The three routes therefore offer different perspectives—a longer horse-riding route, a walk with visible traces of the fire, and a cycling route along the river.

After a walk or bike ride, visitors can enjoy coffee and Limburgse vlaai or a meal at Brasserie De Boshut. It is a specific place to eat in connection with outdoor activities.

Culture and History

The history of Herkenbosch dates back to the Early and Late Middle Ages. Landgoed Kasteel Daelenbroeck also has a long history, dating back to 1311. A guided tour of Kasteel Daelenbroeck takes in the original barrel vaults, the Knights’ Hall and the residential tower; a walk around the estate follows the moats. The visits described there therefore include both historic interiors and paths through the estate.

KunstSalon Kasteel Daelenbroeck is housed in the distinctive rooms of the restored former stables, as well as in the estate’s Travalje and Heinsbergzaal. It hosts regularly changing exhibitions. Herkenbosch is also home to the H.-Sebastianus Church, a parish church protected as a Rijksmonument under number 28550. Its history includes an event from the Second World War: on 20 February 1945, the Germans blew up the church tower so the Americans could not use it after the liberation as a landmark or as a lookout point for artillery observers.

More wartime and commemorative history can be found along the Gelukswandeling “Terug naar vervlogen tijden.” The route passes the war memorial and the Mariakapel; together, they form Geluksplek 21. The Liberation Route audio point in Herkenbosch features an audio drama about experiences from the final years of the war. The story told at the audio point also addresses the execution of Russian forced labourers. These places and stops offer different points of focus: a memorial and a chapel along a walking route, an audio point with an audio drama, and the history of the church tower.

Golf in Herkenbosch

If you would like to include golf in your stay, De Herkenbosche is a specific place to visit: its 18-hole woodland course borders the De Meinweg nature reserve, and guests are welcome at the golf course.
