When looking for a hotel in Ospel, nature and local history offer two concrete starting points. In De Pelen, water, heathland and open spaces take centre stage; the Boswachterspad Mussenbaan Groote Peel also leads along paths dating from the former peat extraction. In the village centre, the Monumentenroute passes eight monuments, while the church and mill each have their own architectural history. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether to focus on birdlife and landscape or on a walk to historic buildings.

Landscape and Birdlife in De Pelen

De Pelen is a landscape of water, heathland, sandy ridges, birch trees and open areas covered in purple moor grass. The mix of wooded and open areas offers a variety of landscape features to explore: heathland and purple moor grass are joined by water and sandy ridges. The Groote Peel attracts more than a hundred breeding bird species; migratory birds such as the trumpeting crane also settle there. Alongside the landscape, birdlife is therefore another feature that can shape your visit.

The Boswachterspad Mussenbaan Groote Peel leads over wooden boardwalks, along the border between Limburg and Brabant and over paths created during the former peat extraction. A meadow bird area lies along the route at the Mussenbaan. If you are interested in both nature and the history of how the landscape was used, this trail brings the two together: the meadow bird area lies along the route, and paths from the peat-extraction period are also part of its character.

Hiking Trails and Buitencentrum De Pelen

Buitencentrum De Pelen is located on the edge of De Groote Peel National Park. As the national park’s visitor centre, it offers an interactive introduction to the area. Three marked hiking trails in the national park also start there: two, three and six kilometres long. In terms of distance, the longest trail is three times as long as the shortest; the three-kilometre route lies exactly between them. This lets you choose the planned length of your hike based on specific distances.

The Buitencentrum sells cycling and hiking maps, books and souvenirs. As the selection may change, it is best to check in advance if you are looking for a particular map or item. You should also check the latest information on the marked hiking trails before setting out.

Kabouterpad De Pelen is a 700-metre activity lasting 45 minutes for children aged three to six. Its length and duration give you a specific timeframe for planning with this age group. Booking and fee information may change; check it in advance if you are planning to take part.

Monuments and Architectural History in Ospel

The Monumentenroute Ospel is a 5.65-kilometre walk through the village centre that passes eight monuments. It is just under the length of the six-kilometre hike starting at the Buitencentrum and longer than the two- and three-kilometre trails that start there. Its focus is different, however: the Monumentenroute leads to monuments in the village centre, while the Boswachterspad Mussenbaan Groote Peel includes paths from the peat-extraction period and the meadow bird area along the Mussenbaan. At Aerthijsplein, the bronze Peelmonument commemorates the reclamation of the raised bog and the natural landscape of the Peel.

Ospel’s historic layout has largely been preserved. The Roman Catholic Onze Lieve Vrouwe Onbevlekte Ontvangenis on the connecting road is designated a Rijksmonument, meaning a nationally protected monument. The church is a three-aisled cross basilica in the Early Gothic style, dating from 1865. It was built together with a rectory to a design by Pierre Cuypers. De Korenbloem has a separate architectural history: the grain mill is in the Op de Stad district of Ospel. Peter Gans from Nederweert built it in 1869; the mill is also dated to 1870. Before setting out, check the latest route information for the hiking trails from the Buitencentrum and the Monumentenroute.
