Scheulder lies on the edge of the Margraten Plateau. An open landscape, marl architecture and an old trade route shape different sides of the village. There is also a cycling route with a cultural connection and walks with varied elevation profiles. The landscape, buildings and routes offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Landscape and village character

The open plateau landscape defines Scheulder, and the surrounding area offers sweeping views. The village developed along an old trade route between Maastricht and Aachen. Old farmhouses stand along the road through Scheulder. The surrounding landscape and the historic farmhouses offer distinct impressions: here, a wide-open view; there, the built character of the village along the road.

Marl, church architecture and heritage

The Sint-Barbarakerk is built entirely of marl. Scheulder’s church is a Neo-Gothic building with a west tower dating from 1850. Inside the church is a late-medieval wooden sculpture of Saint Barbara from the former chapel. It still holds a place of honour on the side altar dedicated to the saint. When considering the historical details, it is worth keeping the different dates distinct: the west tower dates from 1850, while the sculpture is from the late Middle Ages.

The Wingerd dates from the 19th century and is protected as a Rijksmonument. The Carréhoeve, built of marl, has two gates. The location of the H. Hartbeeld is also precise: it stands at the intersection of Scheulderdorpsstraat and Scheuldersteeg. The church, farm and statue each offer a different point of interest if you are interested in the village’s architecture and details.

Cycling and walking

The “Lichtgraffiti” installation reveals hidden engravings made over time in the soft marl of the church tower. It is part of the “Langs Kunst en Cultuur in Eijsden-Margraten” cultural cycling route. For a longer ride, the 30.5-kilometre Margraten MTB Route passes through Scheulder. The two routes can be distinguished by their different focuses: one highlights a cultural detail, while the other is described by its length and course as a mountain biking route.

The walks also differ in their elevation profiles. Walking across the Scheulder Plateau involves no significant elevation gain. The “1933. Scheulder” walk follows a footpath into the Gerendal, then returns to Scheulder via a forest path and a narrow road. It is described as hilly, with a few steep climbs. When weighing up these options, compare the general description of the plateau with the specific details of this walk.

Getting there and choosing a hotel

In Arriva’s 2025 timetable, route 791 ran between Meerssen and Eijsden via Scheulder. Check the current timetable before travelling. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can choose a base in Scheulder according to your interests—for example, the open plateau landscape, the buildings, or the walking and cycling routes described here. Consider which of these themes you would like to focus on during your stay.
