Heerlen offers several themes to consider when planning your stay: Roman traces beneath the modern city, mining history, architecture and street art. There are also paths through the greenery around Terworm. Depending on whether you prefer historical interpretation, art in public spaces or a walk, you can shape your stay in different ways.

Roman Traces and Urban Architecture

In the Romeins Kwartier, Coriovallum is presented as a Roman city beneath the modern city. Archaeological traces include a Roman cellar with five wall niches. Figures of gods or oil lamps for lighting probably stood in them. You can view the cellar on site through a viewing window; an information panel explains the remains. It is also included in the Via Belgica walk “Te voet door Coriovallum” (“On foot through Coriovallum”). The Romeins Museum, formerly called the Thermenmuseum, preserves impressive remains of a Roman bathhouse, the oldest building in the Netherlands.

The Glaspaleis reveals another layer of the city: Frits Peutz designed it for entrepreneur Peter Schunck, and it was built in the 1930s as a modern department store. The SCHUNCK Museum presents a changing programme of exhibitions, activities and projects at the Glaspaleis. On the gallery above the ground floor is the free exhibition “U bevindt zich hier” (“You are here”), about the building. As the programme may change, check before your visit whether the exhibition is currently on display.

Mining History and Historic Sites

The Nederlands Mijnmuseum explores the importance of coal, the heyday of mining, its darker side and the future of the mining region across four floors. The listed accessibility features are also useful when planning a visit: the museum is accessible by wheelchair or mobility walker and has a lift and an adapted toilet.

At the Schelmentoren, interactive touchscreens and life-size projections bring centuries-old stories to life. The tower still has original prison cells where the Bokkenrijders were imprisoned until their verdicts. The Schelmentoren offers arrangements ranging from group visits and conferences to city walks. Due to its historic character, the tower is not wheelchair accessible.

Street Art, Walks and Events

Street art in Heerlen ranges from small, hidden paintings to large murals by international artists and is free to view. The 4 km Street Art Route leads to major murals and smaller artworks. The 3.8 km city walk through Heerlen Centrum offers a different focus: it shows the city’s development from a Roman settlement into an unconventional modern city. This city walk and the Herinneringswandeling are fully wheelchair accessible. The routes therefore highlight different themes: art in public spaces or Heerlen’s development.

If you are planning your trip for late August, Cultura Nova may be important when choosing your dates: this international arts festival takes place every year then and lasts ten days. The programme includes theatre, dance, music, film and visual arts, staged at special locations across the city. Check the event dates for your trip.

Terworm and Practical Information

The Terworm nature area is part of the Geleenbeekdal Natura 2000 site and lies near Heerlen. Its varied landscape includes marshes, fields, deciduous woodland, sunken lanes, a stream and straight ditches. At the Terworm estate, you can walk to the RuĂŻne Eyckholt; the Rondje Terworm route is suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Heerlen also offers opportunities for walking and cycling in green surroundings, including climbs, descents and panoramic views. Special plant and animal species are part of this landscape.

To find your way around the city, it is useful to know that you can walk directly from Heerlen Centraal station through the Maankwartier to the city centre. Designed by artist Michel Huisman, the station district brings together architecture, art and urban life. If you are travelling by bicycle, there is a free, supervised bicycle parking facility at Akerstraat 20, with space for 196 bicycles and e-bikes, as well as charging stations for batteries. Check the opening hours before you arrive.
