Tinallinge: Village History and Meadow Bird Area
Accommodation in Tinallinge
Tinallinge is a wierde village whose history can be read in its wierde and village buildings. There are also walks along the Ossengang, longer routes to Tinallinge and the theme of meadow birds. When planning your stay, you can focus on different interests: architectural and village history, or paths and nature.
Wierde and Village History
The wierde village of Tinallinge probably originated around 500 BC. The wierde on which Tinallinge lies was declared an archaeological monument in 2003; the Dorpswierde is also listed as a Rijksmonument. The date of origin, archaeological classification and monument status refer to different aspects of the place’s history. The wierde’s picturesque streets are lined mostly with middle-class and workers’ houses.
The historic farmsteads include two buildings of the Kop-Hals-Romp type. The Rijksmonument at Abbeweersterweg 3 is a farmstead on an enclosed or moated site. The farm at De Vennenweg 1 has a front house between gables and windows with six panes.
The Hervormde Kerk at Kerkpad 6 is partly medieval. Its wooden chancel screen dates from 1549 to 1557. A clock mechanism in the church of Tinallinge was built in 1545 and is considered the oldest clock mechanism in the province of Groningen; its dial can still be seen in the church.
The former school building also tells the story of the village: it was built in 1869 and is now used as a community building. It is also considered an example of a small village school in the province of Groningen from the second half of the 19th century. At Ter Weer, the chronology is different: the current farm complex was built in 1871 on the site of Borg Ter Weer, which had been demolished in 1720. The farm comprises a two-part barn and a crosswise, basemented, single-storey front house with a hipped roof.
Guided Tours and Routes
You can book a guided tour of Tinallinge with village guide John Vaneman. Depending on your preference, it can include a visit to the church or a walk along the Ossengang, past various monuments and beautiful Groningen houses. The Ossengang is also suitable for a walk around Tinallinge.
Two routes lead to or through Tinallinge for longer outings. The Vijf Wierdenroute is a marked recreational route of 20.3 km that can be used year-round and leads to Tinallinge. The 21 km Maarhuizen–Baflo–Tinallinge walking route starts and ends at Winsum NS railway and bus station; Tinallinge is part of the route. The routes differ in planning terms in their length, whether they are marked, and their stated start and end points. Before setting out, check the current route, as route conditions may change.
Meadow Birds and Agriculture
The nature area of the same name, covering about 26 hectares and managed by Natuurmonumenten, lies on the southern edge of Tinallinge. It is a meadow bird area where lapwings, redshanks and black-tailed godwits, among others, breed. The nature reserve and agriculture offer different ways to explore the subject of meadow birds.
Weidevogelboerderij Rodewolt is a dairy farm in the Tinallinge area, where farming and successful meadow bird management are combined. The Weidevogelexpres offers tours of the site in May and June, using a tractor with a passenger trailer. If you plan to take one of these tours, check before travelling whether it is currently available on your preferred date. This allows you to plan the seasonal tour separately from the other village and landscape activities.
