If you would like to explore natural areas and local history on your trip, Marum offers several points of interest: the Marumerlage with a historic circular walk, other named trails, and individual architectural and interior features. The places and routes can be explored according to your interests: landscapes and waterways, a walk with a historical connection, or cultural heritage in the town.

Natural Areas and Trails Around Marum

The Marumerlage lies north of the A7. The Oude Diep flows through the nature area; it is the upper course of the former sea inlet De Oude Riet. The historic Marumerlage circular walk lies north of the village of Marum and is part of the Natuur Netwerk Nederland. Here, a named waterway, its historical context, and a walking route with its own historical connection come together in the landscape.

The Marumerlage walking route passes a birdwatching hut. A walk around the area begins at the Romanesque Church. On the historic circular walk, the route brochure in the mortuary provides information from prehistory to the present day. This gives you a named starting point, a specific stop, and a timeline spanning from prehistory to today.

The mountain biking route offers another way to explore Marum’s trails: it is 30 kilometers long, passes through the Coendersbos, and starts at the parking lot of Horeca Centrum Heerlijkheid in Marum. For the walk around the Marumerlage, the starting point and birdwatching hut are the specific points of reference; the mountain biking route also has a set distance and a course through the Coendersbos. Check the latest route description before setting out, as practical details may change.

Cultural Landscapes and Stories

’t Pad is the oldest connecting trail across the ridge between Marum and Tolbert. It begins on Dorpsstraat in Marum and passes farms, wooden footbridges, meadows and fields, forests, and various waterways. This sequence of features gives the trail its distinctive connection to the landscape: farming, forests, and water all figure equally in its description.

The Witte Nonnenpad tells of thwarted love stories and of a nun’s love for a Spanish soldier. This trail offers a different perspective on local history from ’t Pad: stories are at its heart, whereas ’t Pad is described as a historic connecting trail across the ridge. If you are interested in Marum’s cultural heritage, you can consider the trail landscape and local stories as distinct perspectives.

The furnishings of Kerk Marum are also worth a closer look: the church has a pew for the lord of the manor dating from the first quarter of the 18th century and a pulpit from 1826. The dates place these features in different periods. The town hall and a recently restored brick windmill base dating from 1837, now used as a business, also stand on Molenstraat.

Another Landscape to Explore

Jilt Dijksheide is the closest to Marum and is the only remaining heathland with a large bog lake. A section of uncut raised bog has been preserved in the lake. This adds another clearly identified nature area to the landscapes of the Marumerlage and its trails. When planning a stay in Marum, you can choose between the walking trails described here, the mountain biking route, and the town’s cultural heritage.
