Lutjegast can be explored through two themes closely connected to the place: Abel Tasman and the traces of an older cultural landscape. The museum, churches, artwork and several trails each offer a different focus. If you are choosing a destination for a hotel stay that combines an interest in local history with outdoor activity, these themes provide concrete points to help you plan. The trails can be distinguished by the features described for each one.

Abel Tasman and the churches of Lutjegast

The Abel Tasman Museum presents the life and voyages of discovery of the seafarer. Lutjegast is his birthplace; Abel Tasman lived in the 17th century and is associated with the discovery of Tasmania and New Zealand. At the museum, visitors can also learn more about his birthplace region, present-day connections with the cultures of the island countries he visited, and the history of land and sea in the northern and southern hemispheres.

The Torenkerk also reflects the history of the village: it dates from 1877 and stands on the same site as its predecessor church. The church, at Abel Tasmanweg 75, contains a 17th-century pulpit with the Prott coat of arms on the pulpit basket, as well as a covered gentlemen’s pew from the 18th century. These furnishings offer a glimpse into two different centuries of church history.

Another cultural highlight is De Baak, an almost seven-metre-high artwork by artist Rob Schreefel, made from boulders. Its height and material make it a distinct point of interest alongside the historic churches and museum.

Rikkerda and history in the landscape

The outlines of the ditches remain at the former site of Rikkerdaborg. At the start of the Rikkerdapad, an information board stands where the access road to the castle once ran. The Rikkerdapad begins at the listed Rikkerda farmstead, dating from 1848, and offers views of the grounds of the former Rikkerdaborg. Along the trail, you will encounter both a historic farmstead and traces and views of the former castle site.

The landscape around Lutjegast features peat and, in places, clay deposits, as well as numerous peat cuttings created by peat extraction. The oldest part of the village lies on a narrow sand ridge along the Abeltasmanweg. To the south, between Lutjegast and Grootegast, is a small-scale cultural landscape with meadow-bird areas and wooded strips. These details offer different insights into the landscape: its geological formation, its use, and the structure of the area between the two places.

Trails and nature as different travel highlights

Lutje Batavia is an outdoor information and educational site about Lutjegast, Abel Tasman, his voyages and the surrounding nature. It is also the starting point for an exploration of Lutjegast and the walking trails of Lutjegast Buiten. In this way, the site combines information about history and nature with the trails described here. Groene Dorpsploats is open to everyone, including people who do not live in Lutjegast. It has an experiential trail with a willow tunnel, as well as a farm with edible forest fruits.

The Abel Tasman Route starts in Lutjegast, the birthplace of the 17th-century explorer associated with the discovery of Tasmania and New Zealand. Along the route, wooded strips on the raised ridges at the parcel boundaries alternate with open pastures in the low-lying areas between them. Notable crossings include a very narrow bridge and a hand-operated ferry across the Wolddiep. If you include this trail in your plans, these specific crossings can serve as useful landmarks.

The Hooge Reed walking trail has a different stated starting point: it begins in the municipality of Grootegast, southwest of the village of Lutjegast, at Bombay. Traces of former houses can be seen in the landscape along the trail. By contrast, the Abel Tasman Route starts in Lutjegast and is linked to the village’s history, as well as to the landscape changes and crossings described above. When choosing a trail, you can therefore start by comparing its starting point and the features mentioned for each one.
