Niftrik: Church, Water Management and Walking Route
Accommodation in Niftrik
For planning your trip, Niftrik’s attractions can be divided into three themes: church history and architecture, water management at the Niftrikse Sluis, and a walking route with a distinctive connection to another route. There is also the Vice Versa ferry and two different bridge connections. You can explore the village according to the focus that suits your reason for visiting: architectural history, walking or crossing the Maas.
Church History and Architecture
Niftrik already had a church in the Middle Ages. At Niftrik’s church, the tower is at one corner rather than centered on the front façade, and it has an onion-shaped spire. The Chapel of Mary is located immediately behind the main entrance, with the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse depicted in its corners. This gives the church two distinct points of interest: the tower’s unusual position on the exterior and the religious imagery in the chapel. These details concern both the building’s exterior and its interior furnishings.
Water Management and Bridges
The Van Citters I pumping station was built in 1926 on the landward side of the Niftrikse Sluis drainage sluice. “Landward side” refers to the side of the dike facing inland. The pumping station and sluice form a functional unit. Its year of construction, location and connection to the sluice make water management a distinct topic alongside church history. Niftrik can therefore be explored through different structures, rather than treating the church and water management as the same part of the village’s history.
The bridges also have specific connections that should be distinguished. On the western, downstream side of the Maas bridge near Maasbandijk 66, there is a narrow footbridge. Its western location and the direction of the current are two reference points for this footbridge. The Edithbrug lies between Niftrik in Gelderland and Ravenstein in Noord-Brabant. The bridges therefore have different local connections: the footbridge is described by its position at the Maas bridge, while the Edithbrug is described by the towns and provinces it connects.
Walking Route and Maas Crossing
For walkers, the Stationswandeling Wijchen-Ravenstein is a specific point of interest. Between Wijchen and Niftrik, part of it follows the same route as the second day of the Nijmeegse Vierdaagse. The overlap concerns only part of the route, so the two routes should not be treated as identical. If walking is the reason for your trip, plan around the Stationswandeling itself and consider its connection to the Vierdaagse as a partial route overlap.
The Vice Versa ferry crosses the Maas between Ravenstein and Niftrik. Its service may change seasonally, so check the current timetable before planning a crossing. The walking route and the ferry involve different planning considerations: one has a partial route overlap, while the other provides a crossing of the Maas. Include each separately in your travel plans.
When looking for a hotel in Niftrik, consider which focus will shape your stay: church history and water management, or the walking connection of the Stationswandeling. If you are also planning to cross the Maas, check the seasonally changing ferry times separately.
