Wageningen offers a variety of reasons to stay: river landscapes and gardens, art, history, and routes for walking or cycling. If you are looking for a hotel in Wageningen, you can plan your trip around which of these aspects of the city you would like to discover. The season and fixed dates may also play a role in your planning.

River Nature and Open Landscapes

The Blauwe Kamer nature reserve showcases the dynamic river landscape of the Neder-Rijn: its landscape includes marshes, willow woodland and flower-rich meadows. The remains of an old brickworks also shape the area. Here, nature and a visible piece of the past meet.

The Wageningse Eng has a different character. It is designated as a National Landscape and forms an open, tranquil area with fields, old sandy paths and hedgerows. The floodplains of the Wageningse Bovenpolder are home to distinctive flora and fauna; cattle and horses graze in the southern part of the area.

There are opportunities for walking and cycling in and around Wageningen. The areas mentioned range from the historic city centre and the floodplains to the Wageningse Berg. There are also cycle routes with numbered junctions. The Klompenpad Wageningse Engpad is about 12.5 kilometres long, can be walked in either direction, and is marked with a purple clog.

Garden Views and Plants

Belmonte Arboretum is a botanical garden covering more than 10.7 hectares. Its collections of trees, shrubs and woody plants are labelled. The garden also offers views across the Neder-Rijn to the Betuwe, with its dikes, meadows with pollarded willows and farmhouses. A visit therefore combines plant diversity with a view of the landscape beyond the river.

Belmonte Arboretum is open every day throughout the year, from sunrise to sunset. Check the opening information before your visit.

History and Commemorative Days

Hotel de Wereld is linked to a specific moment in Dutch history: on 5 May 1945, General Charles Foulkes selected the hotel on behalf of the Allies as the venue for negotiations on the surrender of the German occupation forces in the Netherlands. The Capitulatiezaal is part of the restaurant at Hotel de Wereld.

The 5 Mei Plein also has a regular place in the city's annual commemorations. On 4 and 5 May, the square plays a central role in Wageningen's commemorative events. If you plan your trip for this period, you can appreciate the significance of the square during the annual days of remembrance.

Art and Guided Walks

Beeldengalerij Het Depot is housed in three buildings in Wageningen, connected by Arboretum De Dreijen and Arboretum Hinkeloord. Het Depot's collection includes torsos and fragments of the human body; visitors may touch the sculptures. This makes a visit a special way to engage with sculpture through more than just looking.

Gilde Wageningen organises guided walks in and around Wageningen by arrangement throughout the year. Making an arrangement is part of the planning. If you prefer to explore independently, you can choose from the walking and cycling options mentioned above, as well as the marked Wageningse Engpad; the route's length and direction are described, but not its walking time.

Market Visits and Travel Planning

The Wageningse Streekmarkt in Vijzelstraat offers local products on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., including vegetables, bread, goat's cheese, lamb, juice and tarts, as well as kombucha, pickles, honey and stoof. Check the market hours before you travel. The planning requirements for these offerings therefore differ considerably: the market takes place on Saturdays, guided walks are by arrangement, and the commemorative events at 5 Mei Plein are annual events held on 4 and 5 May.
