Beek-Ubbergen offers travelers several points of interest: historic architecture, walking trails through varied landscapes, and places to visit by the water. Its architectural history is evident in chapel and boarding-school architecture, as well as rare Art Nouveau details. The routes, meanwhile, feature wooded hills, spring areas, polders and a pedestrian ferry. You can tailor your trip to whether you would rather explore buildings, go hiking, or spend time at a recreational area.

Architecture and Local History

De Refter stands on a steep slope in the former upper garden of Huis Ubbergen. Built between 1910 and 1916, the complex combines a Neo-Gothic chapel with a boarding school. Stained-glass windows in the choir are among its notable architectural details. The hillside location and former garden grounds give the building a distinctive connection to the surrounding landscape.

Dennenheuvel offers a different perspective: the building was constructed between 1899 and 1902 in a blend of English country-house style and Art Nouveau. Particularly noteworthy is the well-preserved interior, richly decorated with Art Nouveau motifs, which is exceptionally rare in the Netherlands. While De Refter is defined by its Neo-Gothic use as a chapel and boarding-school complex, Dennenheuvel stands out for its combination of architectural styles and interior design.

Torensigt also preserves historic interiors: the gentlemen’s room and library of Dommer van Poldersveldt. In a park in Beek-Ubbergen, a statue of a washerwoman also recalls the many laundries that once operated in the area. The cultural heritage therefore includes buildings and interiors, as well as a reminder of local history.

Walking Routes Through Varied Landscapes

The official starting point of the N70 Natuurwandelroute is at Hotel-Restaurant ’t Spijker in Beek-Ubbergen. The route crosses eight hills in the rolling forests of Berg en Dal and the surrounding area. Along the way, it offers views of polders, floodplains, and the river landscapes of the Waal and Rhine. Both changes in elevation and views of different landscapes are defining features of the route.

The Werelderfgoedwandeling Neder-Germaanse Limes begins with a stretch through Heerlijkheid Beek, with some steep ups and downs. One of the walk’s listed destinations is the Kleine Bartholomeuskerkje at Nieuwe Holleweg 2 in Beek-Ubbergen. Take the steep opening stretch through Heerlijkheid Beek into account when planning your walk.

The Dorpsommetje Ubbergen-laag offers a different kind of route: the walk is 3.7 kilometers long and passes through the low-lying, damp part of Ubbergen, the spring area, and the polder of Beek. The starting point is a five-minute walk from the Ubbergen – Ubbergse Holleweg bus stop on bus line 80 between Nijmegen and Millingen.

On the Beken, bronnen en bergen route, follow the spring water along streams toward the Ooijpolder. The route also includes the pedestrian ferry across the Meertje. Check whether it is operating before setting out. Unlike the hill and forest stretches described above, this route focuses on the path of water through the landscape.

Museum, Cycling Route and Places by the Water

The Landschapmuseum features eleven miniature landscapes and a walk through the Palland demonstration area. From Nijmegen railway station, take German bus 58 toward Emmerich Bahnhof to the “Beek Sportpark” stop; from there, it is about a fifteen-minute walk to the museum. Bus services may change, so check the connection before you travel. Also check the museum’s visitor information in advance.

For a cycling trip, the Nijmegen–Beek stage of the Via Romana takes you to Roman sights in the Ooijpolder and along the glacial ridge near Beek-Ubbergen. As a recreational destination, Wylerbergmeer offers beaches, a large sunbathing lawn, and views of the hilly landscape of Berg en Dal. Children can enjoy the play equipment, beach, and water. If you plan to swim, check local conditions before your visit.

Another option for families with children is the Kabouterroute Beek-Ubbergen. It starts at Hotel-Restaurant ’t Spijker, Rijksstraatweg 191, Beek-Ubbergen. Along the way, children look for forest gnomes hiding in mushrooms and in the Kabouterboom. Check the starting point before you set out, as route information may change.
