Dieren: Landscape, Routes and Local History
Accommodation in Dieren
Dieren combines its location on the IJssel with views of extensive floodplains and the rolling forests of the Veluwezoom. There are also routes for walking and cycling, as well as historic places in the town centre. If you are looking for a hotel in Dieren, you can plan your trip around whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or combine local history with the landscape.
Landscape and Routes Around Dieren
The Fietsroute Dieren Veluwezoom is approximately 30 kilometres long and can be reached by train via Dieren station. Its terrain ranges from flat sections along the IJssel to hilly countryside. The NS-wanderung Veluwezoom also starts at Dieren station, passes through Veluwezoom National Park and ends at Rheden station or Velp station. Along the way, it passes old country estates and runs through rolling forests and extensive heathland. Both routes connect Dieren with nature, but have different focuses: the Fietsroute is a longer cycle tour, while the walk passes through the national park and has two possible end stations.
Another option for a cycling tour is the Tour de Global Goals Rheden around the village of Dieren. It is described in a short version of 14 kilometres and a long version of 22 kilometres; the difference is 8 kilometres. The route passes through forests and by castles and bodies of water. This lets you plan the length of your tour based on the two options offered. For horse-riding excursions in Veluwezoom National Park, the trails start at one of the entrances on the Eerbeek, Laag-Soeren or Dieren side.
Steam Railway and Local History
The steam railway between Apeldoorn and Dieren is a special attraction, but it does not run every day. Its route follows the more than hundred-year-old Koningslijn through varied woodland and meadow scenery between the Veluwe and the IJssel Valley. As the railway does not run daily, check the timetable before planning a visit. This distinguishes the steam railway from the train connection available for the Fietsroute Dieren Veluwezoom via Dieren station.
There are also historic points of interest in the town. Dieren-Zuid is the old town centre and features various historic monuments. The Schweer bey der Beckehof is a state-protected monument with 35 homes. Its founding dates back to the estate of the Amsterdam merchant Schweer bey der Becke. At the lock on the Apeldoorns Kanaal, listening post No. 24 on the Liberation Route Europe recalls events from the Second World War. These places highlight different aspects: the Schweer bey der Beckehof and Dieren-Zuid focus on historic buildings, while the listening post commemorates wartime events.
A Day Out with Children
Dierense Speeltuin is a volunteer-run playground where children and parents can play together. One special feature is the Nattevoetenpad: children in wheelchairs can use it too.
