Doorwerth: Water Castle, Heritage and Trails
Accommodation in Doorwerth
Kasteel Doorwerth is a medieval water castle with a courtyard and a large outer bailey. It lies between the Neder-Rijn and the southern Veluwe. The sights offer different points of interest for planning your trip: castle history, archaeological heritage, trails through river floodplains and a moraine landscape, as well as gardens and collections. When looking for a hotel in Doorwerth, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
Kasteel Doorwerth and its history
The complex combines a medieval castle design with a turbulent history. In autumn 1944, Kasteel Doorwerth was reduced to ruins during the Battle of Arnhem. It was subsequently fully restored over a period of 37 years. This historic turning point helps put the present-day building in context not only as a castle, but also as a restored complex.
Kasteel Doorwerth is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As opening hours can change, check visiting times before making plans. Guided tours take place on the first and third Thursday of each month. Other tours cover the castle or its surroundings, the vegetable garden or beekeeping. If you would like to join a guided tour, check dates and reservation requirements in advance.
The vegetable garden and the paths around Kasteel Doorwerth are free to access for visitors using a wheelchair, rollator or mobility scooter. This information applies to the garden and the paths around the castle. It should not be confused with a statement about access to every part of the complex.
Hiking trails with different points of interest
The Dorenweertsepad runs through the floodplains of the Neder-Rijn, over the push moraine with its old estates and hillside forests, and around Kasteel Doorwerth. This route brings river scenery, landforms and the castle together in a single trail description. The Hevearoute offers a different focus: it passes the former site of the Duno manor house and the Hunnenschans. The Dorenweertsepad connects landscape and castle, while the Hevearoute highlights historic sites. Trail conditions and access may change, so check them before setting out.
Hunneschans de Duno is a medieval archaeological ringfort monument. The oval earthwork has remains of palisades and postholes from a building. The site probably served as a fortification on the push moraine. This cautious interpretation is part of the site's history: it is a probable explanation, not a certainty.
Cycling route and landscape at Duno
The Doorwerth cycle junction route is 32.9 kilometres long and follows the cycle junction network around Kasteel Doorwerth. Near the starting point, there is free parking for four cars at Fonteinallee 4. As parking rules may change, check the information before your trip.
Landgoed Duno lies south of Doorwerth on the push moraine and offers views of the Neder-Rijn and its floodplains. A dedicated mountain biking route has also been created there; check the current signage locally. Visible remains, the old Azalealaan, and the remains of the tea house and entrance gate are reminders of the manor house's former site. These historic traces add evidence of the former estate to the landscape.
At the foot of Duno's push moraine, numerous streams and ponds provide a habitat for toads, frogs, newts and kingfishers. Alongside its historic sites, the landscape therefore offers an ecological perspective. When choosing hiking or cycling routes, you can weigh cultural heritage sites and nature as different interests in planning your trip.
More culture and gardens
Watertoren Doorwerth is a Rijksmonument dating from 1938. Designed by Ir. Th.K.J. Koch, the tower is in the Amsterdam School style. For those interested in architectural history, it offers a different architectural point of reference from the medieval water castle.
The Apothekersmuseum Kisters in Doorwerth was founded by the pharmacist couple Kisters-Ascherman and houses a special collection of pharmacy utensils. De Tuinen van MergenMetz includes a vegetable garden, an edible ornamental garden, an herb garden, a dye garden and an orchard, as well as a wooded area with pigs. Offerings include workshops, dinners and group cooking sessions. If you would like to plan for these activities, check current dates and booking options.
