If you are considering Tuil as a destination for a stay, two aspects of the place stand out: paths through the river landscape and historical traces in the village. There is also a scenic area around the Tuilse Put and regional castle history. This can help you decide whether you would most like to associate Tuil with hiking, nature watching, or architectural and local history.

Circular routes of varying lengths

The Rondje Tuil is a circular walking route of more than four kilometres in and around the village. It passes orchards, kolken and grienden, which are typical of the river landscape. Grienden are wet areas that are regularly flooded. Their lush undergrowth includes mosses and liverworts, among other plants; they are also rich in birds and insects. Check the path conditions before setting out.

The Kabouterpad around the Tuilse Put is exactly one kilometre long, making it considerably shorter than the Rondje Tuil. The route opened in 2024. Posts with QR codes help visitors look for the gnome Kolkie and teach children about the nature and animals in the surrounding area. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in the experiences described. For children aged around six and up, the Natuurspeeltuin Tuil includes a castle-courtyard play area designed as Kasteel Tuil.

River landscapes and nature watching

The Tuilse Put is a sand extraction pit. Beneath it lies a remnant of the former Waal oxbow. The river landscape can also be part of a walk: with a bit of luck, you can spot kingfishers near the griend and the cut-off Waal oxbow. Such sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed, so do not plan them as a fixed part of your itinerary.

Architectural history and traces in the village

The Hervormde Kerk Tuil complex comprises more than just the church: it includes a tower, a consistory, an entrance gate with a wall, and a rectory with an adjoining coach house and gate. The individual parts date from different periods. The tower dates from the 14th century, the nave from 1810, and the consistory from around 1850. This range of dates places the architectural history in the context of the various parts of the complex.

The history of the parish also goes back a long way: it is first mentioned in 1031 and was historically the mother church of Haaften, Hellouw, Gameren and Nieuwaal. Another historical trace is the Melssinghdreef, which served as the access road to the former Kasteel Den Esch. Paving stones from the historic Langstraat are also still visible in Tuil’s floodplain.

Castles and accommodation

The Waalroute section of the Kastelenroute West Betuwe runs from Meteren to Vuren and includes 16 castles. Kasteel Klingelenburg, also known as Huys te Tuil or Huys Klingelenburg, is part of this Waalroute. Check the current route information before setting out.

De Heeren van Tuil is a bed and breakfast in a Betuwse national monument dating from 1720. If you are considering staying here, check availability and services directly.
