Opheusden brings together river landscapes, cycling and walking routes, and historic landmarks. If you are looking for a hotel in Opheusden, you can plan your stay around whether you want to spend time in the De Spees floodplain, on a particular route, or at historic sites.

De Spees: Floodplain, Water and Watchtower

De Spees is a floodplain on the southern side of the Nederrijn. Large bodies of water were created there by the extraction of gravel and clay for nearby brickworks; they provide habitats for many water birds. You can walk in De Spees at any time of year, provided the water level is not too high. Take this condition into account when planning your visit.

On the side of the dike facing inland stands a replica of a Roman watchtower dating from the 2nd century. You can climb the tower and enjoy views across the Rhine to the Grebbeberg and Rhenen. The visible fortification, Vestingwerk De Spees, is also a Rijksmonument and part of the extension of the Grebbelinie. Here, natural surroundings and a historic structure stand side by side as different aspects of the same place.

Walking and Cycling Routes by Length and Theme

For a cycling trip, the Doorbraakkolkenroute Neder-Betuwe offers three possible distances: 60 kilometres, or shorter options of 30 or 36 kilometres. This lets you choose the length of your ride from the distances available. Route information may change as paths are maintained; check the route before setting off.

The Heuzesepad is a walking route through the varied countryside around Opheusden. It runs along rivers and through floodplains, as well as through the river-ridge landscape with its centuries-old tree cultivation. The Laanboomroute Betuwe has a different focus: it passes through landscapes and tree nursery plots with terraces. Its concept also includes welcoming food and leisure options in Neder-Betuwe, Overbetuwe and Buren.

The Monumentenroute Neder-Betuwe can also be considered for a trip: it is intended for bicycles or vintage cars. Its official starting point in Opheusden is at the Laanboomcentrum on Dodewaardsestraat. This gives you different options for planning your outing: a set distance, river and tree landscapes, or a route focused on monuments.

Historic Traces in Opheusden

Opheusden was liberated by the Belgian Brigade Piron on 18 April 1945. The history of the church also goes back a long way: an old church register mentions a church in “Heusden” in 1395. Opheusden church was probably rebuilt after being destroyed amid civil unrest at the end of the 15th century.

A memorial stone in the church commemorates Pastor A. van Herwaarden. He was fatally struck by lightning on 29 July 1855 during an evening service. The built heritage also includes the former ferry house, with an adjoining farmhouse, at Veerweg 1. It is elevated, dates mainly from the second half of the 19th century, and also features older building elements.

Garden, Getting There and Practical Information

The Laanboomhuis is near the A15 and Opheusden railway station on the Arnhem–Tiel line. Its garden is laid out like a park and includes small tree nursery plots as well as a nature, play and learning area. At the Laanboomhuis, visitors can learn about the craft and the latest ideas and techniques. Alongside the routes, these facilities provide a separate point of interest related to tree cultivation.

FietStop at the Veerhuis, Veerweg 1 in Opheusden, offers free car parking, food and drinks, electric bicycle charging, and facilities for minor repairs. As services may change, check what is currently available before your visit.

The ferry between Opheusden and Wageningen is a historic link between the Betuwe and the southern edge of the Veluwe. A temporary closure is currently indicated. Check current operating status before planning a crossing.
