In Asperen, three themes come together: the heritage of the Hollandse Waterlinies, the architecture of historic churches, and paths through the landscape along the Linge. You can plan your stay around whether you are particularly interested in fortifications, architectural history, walks, or cycling. The following places and routes offer different highlights—from preserved defenses to orchards and reed beds.

Fortification Heritage and Water Lines

Wapenplaats Asperen is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Hollandse Waterlinies and is also the smallest fort of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. The ramparts and moat have been preserved on Asperen’s three landward sides. The restored town wall offers walks with views of the Linge and the locks. The Lingesluizen near Asperen were an essential part of the inundation system in the area between the Lek and the Waal.

Fort bij Asperen was built as a tower fort from 1840 onward. Volunteers offered guided tours of the tower fort, sharing stories about the Hollandse Waterlinies. The fort is also home to the Sky of Hope Museum, which presents stories from the Second World War. The historical theme thus encompasses both the former function of the water lines and the wartime stories told there.

Churches and Architectural History

The St. Catharina Church in Asperen is a late Gothic cruciform church. Its pseudo-basilican nave stands on columns, and the deep choir ends in a five-sided apse. Wooden barrel vaults span the nave, choir, and transept, while the aisles have half-barrel vaults.

Another striking building is the tower of the Hervormde Kerk: this tall brick structure dates from the late 15th century. Together with the distinctive spatial forms of St. Catharina Church, it offers another way to explore Asperen’s architectural history.

Walks and Walking Routes

The “Parels langs de Linge” walk starts in Leerdam and follows the Linge toward the small fortified town of Asperen. Along the way, it passes Fort bij Asperen and the picturesque village of Acquoy. The Merckenburgsepad offers a different focus: it follows dikes along the Linge through the riverbank landscape, passing a castle and the old towns of Asperen and Heukelum. Its dike slopes include wet woodlands and marshes rich in flora and fauna.

When choosing between the walking routes, their course and landscapes are useful points of distinction: “Parels langs de Linge” focuses on the route from Leerdam to Asperen and the places along the way, while the Merckenburgsepad is shaped by its dikes, riverbank landscape, and old towns. The interactive app game “Het geheim van Asperen” is planned for the 2026 season. It leads through the historic center to several puzzle points in Asperen and can be played at any time.

Cycling Routes through the Linge Landscape

The “Fietsen langs de Linge” cycling route passes through Asperen, Heukelum, and Arkel. Orchards, meadows, and reed beds shape the landscape, alongside views of the water and the Linge’s traditional dikes. The Lingewaalroute starts in Asperen and runs through the municipality of West Betuwe, through Leerdam, Acquoy, and Beesd, as well as other small historic towns and a section of nature.

The route descriptions emphasize different features: “Fietsen langs de Linge” focuses on the waterside landscape and the dikes. By contrast, the Lingewaalroute starts in Asperen and passes through several named places. This lets you choose based on the scenery and stops that interest you most on a cycling trip.
