Veessen on the IJssel: Paths, Water and Village History
Accommodation in Veessen
Veessen lies on a large meander of the IJssel. When planning your trip, the type of activity is a good place to start: the Elsvoorderpad Klompen walking trail passes through the village and along the river, a canoe route starts in Veessen, and the Kozakkenveer provides a seasonal ferry service for cyclists. The Veessen-Wapenveld flood channel adds a further dimension to the landscape, with new nature and cycle paths over newly built dikes. The church and Oranjefeest add further cultural highlights.
Hiking and paddling with specific landmarks
The Elsvoorderpad Klompen walking trail runs through Veessen and along the IJssel River. Green Klomp symbols mark the route in both directions. The markings in both directions give you a clear reference point when considering the walking trail. The Noordoost-Veluwe canoe route differs in both activity and starting point. It begins at the Nieuwe Wetering behind De Nijensteen in Veessen and is about 12 kilometres long. The starting point and approximate total distance help you assess the canoe trip in advance as a separate option. When choosing, consider the difference between a marked walking trail along the river and a canoe route with a named starting point and approximate distance.
Flood channel and cycle paths
The Veessen-Wapenveld flood channel is another landscape feature. An eight-kilometre channel was created near Veessen and Wapenveld. The project brought new nature to the area, and cycle paths run over the flood channel’s new dikes. Thus, alongside its natural setting on the IJssel, the area also features a deliberately created landscape with additional nature and cycle paths. When choosing a route, the paths over the dikes differ from the Elsvoorderpad, which runs through Veessen and along the IJssel. The IJssel bend and the flood channel therefore represent two distinct landscape features: Veessen’s position on the meander on the one hand, and a constructed project with new nature and cycle paths on the other.
The Kozakkenveer for cyclists
The Kozakkenveer departs from Veessen harbour and carries cyclists between Veessen and the Duursche Waarden nature area in Overijssel. Its departure point at the harbour gives you a specific starting point for this ferry service. It operates seasonally. Check the timetable for your travel dates before planning the crossing. This is particularly useful if the crossing is an important part of your route planning.
Church and Oranjefeest
The current church building in Veessen dates from 1843 and stands out for its unusual octagonal shape. These are two clear features to help you understand the village’s character: the year the current building was constructed and its distinctive shape. The Oranjefeest, organised annually by the Oranjecomité Veessen, Vorchten en Marle, is a recurring event. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your intended travel period. For a trip focused on events, the festival date should therefore be given different weight than the church’s construction date and architecture.
