Accommodation in Meteren
Meteren offers visitors a combination of architectural history, archaeological traces and outdoor activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Meteren, these themes can help you plan your stay: the church and two listed buildings sit alongside the finds at De Plantage, as well as a QR-FIT route and a nature playground. This can help you decide whether to include mainly historic sites or leisure activities in your travel plans.
Church and listed buildings
The church at Dorpsstraat 16 is originally Gothic and was extended in 1837 with a choir closed on three sides. Its features include a pulpit from the mid-18th century with a copper reading desk and a covered gentleman’s pew from the first half of the 18th century. The comparison of dates places the choir and furnishings in different building phases, rather than attributing everything to a single period.
The history of Meteren’s church also includes a one-manual mechanical organ built by K. M. van Puffelen in 1875. Two other addresses represent different listed-building categories: Dorpsstraat 8 is a municipal monument; Dorpsstraat 4 is a national monument protected by the state. The designations distinguish between municipal and national protection.
Historic building styles
Meteren has several hall-house farms with a front house set crosswise and a roof overhang at the rear. Most were built in the second half of the 19th century, although some have an older core. This means distinguishing between two periods: the predominant construction period of the farms and the earlier age of some cores. The style can also be recognized by specific features: the crosswise front house and the roof overhang at the rear.
De Plantage and early local history
The archaeological park at De Plantage is located where Huis te Meteren once stood and Meta was found. One of the oldest traces of settlement at the site is a temporary hunting camp dating from between 4000 and 3500 BC. Describing it as temporary means it was a short-term camp, not a permanent settlement.
Excavations at De Plantage documented 44 cremation graves containing the remains of nearly 60 different people. The figures refer to different things: the graves on the one hand and the human remains on the other. There is also a separate point of reference for dating: the first definite mention of Huis Meteren dates from around 1400.
Outdoor leisure
A municipal magazine from 2024 describes a QR-FIT route in Meteren. At each stop, you can use the app to view an exercise. Before visiting, check whether the markers and app information are currently usable. The free QR-FIT app also lets you view routes, join a team or start exercises on your own.
A nature playground for children aged 0 to 12 is located on Lindelaan. This gives you an outdoor destination in Meteren specifically aimed at this age group, alongside the historic attractions.
