Doornspijk is situated in a rural area between water, forest, heath and sand drifts. The Doornspijkse Heide is suitable for hiking; at the same time, historical places and nature observations shape the character of the village. This means different highlights are available side by side for your travel planning: a route through the heath, the open sand drift De Zoom, and a former church site with a bird hide and a view of the reed belts of the Veluwemeer. These specific locations give your stay in Doornspijk a connection to the landscape and local history.

Heath and sand drift

A route across the Doornspijkse Heide passes by the sand drift De Zoom. The heath is the hiking area, with De Zoom a specific open spot within it that the path passes. De Zoom lies in the heath and is characterized by sparse vegetation. Wind and rainwater have blown sand there. The sand drift has a distinctive flora and fauna, including juniper bushes. At this location, both the open landscape and the plant and animal life come to the fore. Those who pay attention to both while hiking will notice more than just the course of the route: the texture of the sandy area and its junipers are also part of the natural character of De Zoom.

Landgoed Klarenbeek and the Thornspiccerpad

Landgoed Klarenbeek is located right in the center of Doornspijk. The name had already appeared in the 16th century in the spelling “Claerbeeke”. The Thornspiccerpad also has a connection to the estate: it passes by shortly before the village. The form of the name offers a glimpse into the area’s earlier history, while the Thornspiccerpad describes the specific route past the estate. The route is being revised, and the signage may be incomplete. If you plan to take the Thornspiccerpad, check the latest route information before setting out.

The former Sint-Ludgeruskerk

The former Sint-Ludgeruskerk was completely dismantled in 1825 after severe storm damage and a fire caused by a lightning strike. Stones above the former foundations mark its original location. The site is reachable on foot from the fortress via the sea dike. There, visitors can observe waterbirds from a bird hide. Benches and picnic tables offer a view of the reed belts of the Veluwemeer. At the same location, you can encounter historical traces and a concrete opportunity for nature observation: the stones refer to the former foundations, while the bird hide and waterbirds draw attention to the landscape at the site. The former church site and birdwatching can therefore be considered together when planning a visit.

Commemoration of the war dead

A plaque lists the names of all those from the municipality of Doornspijk who died in the Second World War. On May 2, 2025, eight names of victims were added. The Doornspijk – Veldweg war memorial commemorates fellow citizens who lost their lives as a result of acts of war during the occupation years.
