Doesburg brings together city history, art and landscape for a stay. In the historic city centre, a medieval street pattern shapes the urban landscape. There are also monuments, museums with different focuses and an unpaved walking path along the Lage Linie. This gives you specific interests to guide your plans: historic buildings, art and collections, or the bodies of water, reed beds and marshland around the path.

Historic City Centre and Architectural History

Doesburg’s historic city centre was designated a protected townscape in 1974. It has a medieval street pattern. The city centre has more than 150 monuments, as well as narrow streets, old façades and atmospheric squares. De Waag, also known as Hoge Huus, dates from 1478 and is considered the oldest beer house in the Netherlands. These two dates mark different aspects of the city’s history: 1974, when the townscape was designated, and 1478, the year De Waag was built. The layout of the city centre and the history of a single building thus sit side by side.

Museums with Different Focuses

The Lalique Museum Doesburg is located in the historic centre of Doesburg. It is dedicated to René Lalique (1860–1945), a world-renowned French jewellery and glass artist. In addition to a permanent exhibition, the museum presents temporary exhibitions featuring works by Lalique and his contemporaries. Its enduring focus on Lalique and the changing presentations complement each other: his works are shown alongside those of artists from his era.

The Streekmuseum De Roode Tooren covers a broad range of subjects. It has a working tobacco-cutting shop dating from 1894 and a historic grocery shop from the period 1880 to 1940. Its extensive collections include trade and crafts, religion, the fire service, folk art and folklore, flags and textiles, archaeology and geology. Its wide-ranging collections thus differ from the Lalique Museum’s focus on a single artist. This offers a clear comparison to suit your interests: a museum centred on one artist and one whose collections cover a range of subjects.

Path and Landscape

An unpaved walking path runs along the Lage Linie and can be accessed from Turfhaven or Kraakselaan. The surrounding area includes bodies of water and valuable reed beds and marshland. Here, the path’s surface and the landscape take centre stage, while the city centre’s architectural history and the museums’ exhibitions and collections offer different cultural themes. If you are interested in both urban history and landscape, this path adds another perspective to the museums and monuments.
