Discover Culemborg: History and River Landscapes
Accommodation in Culemborg
When choosing a hotel stay in Culemborg, it is worth considering the city’s different sides: historic buildings and museum history sit alongside paths through the river landscape. Think about whether your trip will focus more on a city walk, a museum visit, or time on hiking trails.
Historic Buildings and Museum History
The Binnenpoort is a brick gate tower dating from the 14th century and a Rijksmonument, a Dutch national monument. It is currently used as the artist Rop Philippi’s studio. If you would like to see inside the Binnenpoort, check before visiting whether access is possible. The Oude Stadhuis was built in 1534 in the Brabant Gothic style.
The Elisabeth Weeshuis Museum is Culemborg’s city museum. It is housed in the Culemborgse Weeshuis, the oldest orphanage in the Netherlands built specifically for orphaned children. More than 700 orphans grew up there between 1560 and 1952. Today, the museum exhibition takes visitors on a journey through time across nine rooms in the monumental building. The museum is a 15- to 20-minute walk from Culemborg station. Its food and drink offerings include coffee, tea, local specialties, and light lunch dishes.
The grounds of Kasteeltuin Culemborg also have historical significance: their archaeological value is high. An exhibition of archaeological finds from the area is held each year in the Groene Schuur on the former castle grounds. The foundation aims to develop the grounds as a public historic cultural city park.
Windmill, Fort, and River Landscape
The Johannamolen was built in 1878. During the half-day workshop “Be a Miller for a Day,” participants carry out the miller’s tasks themselves. The mill grinds flour from organic wheat, spelt, and emmer wheat; the grain is grown as locally as possible. The building’s history, practical milling work, and processing of different grain varieties make a visit a distinct focus for planning your trip.
Werk aan het Spoel is one of the forts in the Hollandse Waterlinies, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in the river landscape, three kilometres from the centre of Culemborg along the Lekdijk. From Culemborg, the fort can be reached on foot or by bicycle via the Goilberdingerdijk. The programme includes outings and guided tours, an annual nature day, a Forts Fair, and dance and theatre performances. Check current dates for events.
Two routes of different lengths and formats start at Werk aan het Spoel. The 15-kilometre Klompenpad hiking trail, the Goilberdingerpad, starts there and passes through the western outskirts of Culemborg, by pastures, dikes, Fort Everdingen, and the floodplains of the Lek. The 3.5-kilometre Jan Blankenpad is an interactive discovery trail through the floodplains from Werk aan het Spoel to Fort Everdingen and back. Check the trail conditions before setting out.
The Ronde Haven is located on the site of a former port of Culemborg. The area includes a body of water with an old river channel called the “Kleine Lek,” several meadows, and a willow forest. It offers a different perspective on the landscape from the paths near the fort: here, water, open meadows, and trees shape the setting.
Walks and Practical Information
Stichting Stadsgidsen Culemborg offers a historical city tour of about 1.5 hours with a guide. It also offers an accessible route through the historic centre, with several rest stops and wheelchair-accessible toilets. A Stolpersteine tour visits places where Jewish residents of Culemborg lived and worked. For your visit, you can choose between a general historical tour, an accessible walk, and a tour with a particular thematic focus.
The ferry between Culemborg and Schalkwijk carries all types of traffic, operates year-round, and departs in Culemborg from the marina at Veerkade. Check its current operating status before travelling. When planning your overnight stay, these different themes can help you decide which visits and activities will be the focus of your stay in Culemborg.
