Hiking in Wichmond

The 93-kilometre long-distance hiking trail Ludgerpad passes through Wichmond and is divided into stages that can also be walked individually as day hikes. You do not need to think of the total distance as the length of a single day’s hike: you can include one stage in your plans. From Wichmond, the Ludgerpad heads towards Hengelo through the rural surroundings, with pastures, farms and unpaved paths.

The Ockhorstroute runs around Wichmond and Vierakker through the typical Achterhoek coulisse landscape. It follows paths through country estates and farms, as well as a restored church path. Brown signs featuring a white flying goose mark the route. These markings give you a distinctive landmark to look out for along the way.

When choosing between the routes, consider their different layouts: the Ludgerpad is a 93-kilometre long-distance hiking trail with individual day stages; the Ockhorstroute runs around Wichmond and Vierakker. If you are planning a stage, you can take the Ludgerpad’s divisions into account. If you want a route around both villages, the Ockhorstroute offers a clear point of reference.

Church history and buildings

The earliest known mention of Wichmond, under the name Withmundi, dates from 794. Local church history includes the first congregation on the IJssel, established in Wichmond by Saint Ludger. Today’s Protestant congregation is its continuation. These are distinct historical references: 794 marks the earliest known mention of the name, while the link with Ludger concerns the history of the congregation.

The present-day Protestant church and vicarage were built in 1855 for the Dutch Reformed congregation of the time. The Protestant church on Dorpsstraat is among the oldest buildings in present-day Wichmond. The Hervormde Kerk at Dorpsstraat 16 houses a one-manual organ made by H. Knipscheer in Amsterdam in 1867. Because of this organ, the church is protected as a Rijksmonument. The construction year of the church and vicarage complex, as well as the year the instrument was made, are part of the village’s history.
