For a trip to Bronckhorst, you can focus on three different themes: the historic townscape of Bronkhorst, contemporary art, and a signposted walking route with views across the IJssel. This lets you plan according to whether you are more interested in architectural and local history or would rather walk outdoors through the landscape. Crossing the IJssel and visiting regional shops are also practical considerations in their own right.

Historic traces in Bronkhorst

The historic centre of Bronkhorst retains a largely medieval street layout. Narrow streets, cobbled roads, old farmhouses and dozens of monumental buildings shape the townscape. Exploring the area is not just about individual houses: the street layout is also part of the historic character that has been preserved here.

The remains of the former castle, a scale model of the castle and historical information can be found on the Kasteelheuvel. The model and information complement the visible remains, giving an impression of the former castle complex. The Jewish cemetery 't Hof offers a different perspective: it has existed since 1859 and contains 17 gravestones and a brick mortuary. The entire site is protected as a Rijksmonument.

Art and information

Kunstruimte VEER is located in the former service house and includes a sculpture garden. The art space presents changing exhibitions of contemporary art and design. As the exhibitions change, it is best to check what is currently on view before your visit.

TOP Bronkhorst provides information about Bronkhorst and the surrounding area, as well as walking and cycling routes. Use this information point to help you choose a route on foot or by bike.

Walking through pastureland and along the IJssel

The Van molen tot molenroute can be walked in either direction and is marked with yellow signposts. It passes through varied pastureland with grassy tracks, ditches, hedgerows and characteristic pollarded willows. Between Rha and Bronkhorst, one section follows the dike and offers expansive views across the IJssel. The route therefore alternates between views of the pastureland and views of the river from the dike.

The Molenkolk is a remnant of a meander of the IJssel and a body of water rich in fish and birds.

Crossing the IJssel and regional products

The Bronkhorsterveer crosses the IJssel between Bronkhorst and Brummen, carrying pedestrians, cyclists and cars. If you plan to use the ferry, check the timetable beforehand; its operating status may vary.

On the edge of Bronkhorst, the Streekwinkel De Olde Schuure sells regional products, sweets and a variety of gift items. Its opening status may also vary. If you plan to shop there, check before your visit.
