When planning a trip to Beekbergen, several specific themes come together: scenic routes, the Exodus Monument and the chance to board a steam train run by the Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij (VSM). Different details can help you find your bearings: the routes’ landscapes and lengths, the annual day of remembrance and the train’s operating days. If you’re looking for a hotel in Beekbergen, you can start by deciding which of these experiences you want to shape your stay.

Routes through landscapes and historic countryside

The Bekbergerpad passes through the stream valley of Beekbergen, along historic enken and through ancient Veluwe forests. If the landscape is a priority when choosing a route, this one offers a combination of valley, historic cultural landscape and forest.

“Enk en Holt” offers another perspective. The route version dated October 2024 is 7.5 kilometres long. It runs across part of the Beekberger Enk, an old cultural landscape, and continues through the former Spelderholt estate. The starting point is listed as the car park on Arnhemseweg in Beekbergen, opposite De Smittenberg.

“Rondom Beekbergen en Loenen” is a cycling route. The IVN route version from June 2020 gives its length as 29.3 kilometres. It starts in Beekbergen, goes to Loenen and returns. The two routes can be compared by their different points of reference: “Enk en Holt” is described in terms of the Beekberger Enk and the former Spelderholt estate; the cycling route is defined by its length, destination of Loenen and return leg.

Remembrance at the Exodus Monument

The Exodus Monument in Beekbergen commemorates the evacuees from Arnhem, as well as the people who took in the refugees and gave them shelter. The monument, also known as “de boom” (“the tree”), consists of a tree-shaped structure made of Corten steel. An information board beside the monument explains its history in Dutch, English and German. Its theme, design and the information provided there help you understand the memorial site.

A remembrance ceremony is held at the Exodus Monument every year on 25 September. If you’d like to include this occasion in your travel plans, the date provides a clear point of reference.

Ride the Koningslijn with the VSM

You can board a steam train in Beekbergen operated by the Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij. The train travels between Apeldoorn and Dieren along the more than hundred-year-old Koningslijn. This offers another way to shape your trip in addition to the routes described above. If a train ride is part of your stay, check the operating days before you travel; schedules may change.

First decide which theme will shape your stay, then tailor your search accordingly.
