Piaam: Nature, Village History and Culture
Accommodation in Piaam
If you are considering Piaam as a destination for a hotel stay, three themes can help you get your bearings: village history, nature watching and cultural activities. Piaam is designated as a protected village landscape. Its history includes the late Gothic Sint-Nicolaaskerk, De Nynke Pleats and Piaam State; nature enthusiasts can explore the De Ral birdwatching hut and the landscape along the IJsselmeer. Cultural activities are organised at Podium Piaam.
Village History and Buildings
The Sint-Nicolaaskerk in Piaam is a late Gothic brick church. A wooden roof turret sits above the west façade. The term late Gothic describes the church’s style; brick and roof turret refer to specific features of the building. In addition to the architecture of individual buildings, Piaam is designated as a protected village landscape. This designation applies to the village landscape and provides an overall perspective on the area’s history.
’t Fûgelhûs is a natural history museum in Piaam. It complements the historical focus with a museum theme. If you are planning a visit, check visiting options in advance. De Nynke Pleats, an 18th-century Frisian farmhouse, lies east of the church. Piaam State dates from the 17th century and has listed status. Together with the church, these sites offer different ways to explore Piaam’s architectural history.
Nature Watching at De Ral
The De Ral birdwatching hut is accessible year-round. The path from the dike side leads down a staircase, through willow scrub and reed marsh, and then over a footbridge. This sequence gives a clear picture of the route: the descent is followed by vegetation and a bridge crossing. From the dike platform at the hut, you can see the Makkumer Súdwaard, the Koaiwaard and the IJsselmeer. The route and the view offer different points of reference for planning: the route describes access to the hut, while the platform looks out over the named natural areas and the IJsselmeer. If you want to focus on nature watching, the hut, platform and view are specific points of reference.
Waterways and Natural Areas
The Dyksfearten are a series of waterways that run parallel to the road and now serve mainly as ecological corridors. Both the waterways and their ecological function are part of the landscape. Kooiwaard is one of three nature areas outside the dikes on the IJsselmeer coast, and lies a little further on from Piaam. This adds a broader coastal context to the view from the dike platform.
Buismanskoai is a former duck decoy in a small woodland in the middle of a meadow near Piaam. Today, the site is used for bird ringing.
Cultural Activities
Cultural activities are organised at Podium Piaam. If a cultural event is to shape your stay, check the event dates before you travel. This way, you can choose what to focus on in Piaam according to your interests: village history, a specific nature-watching spot or cultural activities each offer a different emphasis. When looking for hotels for a trip to Piaam, you can prioritise these interests in your travel plans.
