Oost-Vlieland between village history and the Wadden Sea
Accommodation in Oost-Vlieland
The ferry arrives directly in Oost-Vlieland, the island’s only village. If you’re looking for a hotel in Oost-Vlieland, you can plan your stay around the things that interest you: the historic village centre, paths through the forest and dunes, or nature activities around the Wadden Sea. Activities also vary in format: alongside walks you can do on your own, there’s a named village walk and guided nature activities. When planning, you can take both your interests and the stated time required into account.
Arriving, the village and its paths
Visitors are not allowed to bring cars to Vlieland. A bus is available when the ferry arrives, and bicycles can also be rented. Exact bus arrangements and rental availability may change, so it’s a good idea to check this information before your trip. The layout of the paths can help you find your way by bike: the forest around Oost-Vlieland is criss-crossed by cycle paths, while outside the forest most cycle paths run through the dunes.
The old village of Oost-Vlieland lies below Vuurboetsduin and is characterised by authentic gabled façades. Since 1971, the village centre has been designated a protected village landscape. A walk around the village therefore takes in both the façades and the historic character of the centre. From the lighthouse on the 40-metre-high Vuurboetsduin, you can see across the village, the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. Check the lighthouse visiting hours before you go.
Cultural and historical sites and walks
Tromp’s Huys Museum tells the cultural, historical and maritime story of Vlieland. It is housed in the island’s oldest building, constructed shortly after 1575. The Nicolaaskerk dates from 1605 and is one of the oldest originally Protestant church buildings in the Netherlands. Both places offer different ways to explore the island’s history: the museum focuses on its maritime past, while the church is an early Protestant building.
A cultural and historical walk through the old part of Oost-Vlieland can be done independently. The “Jan Houter” village walk passes houses, monuments and special places. If you’re planning to take this walk, check the dates in advance, as they may change. Another historical route is the one at the Wn 12H Bunker Museum. It leads past trenches and bunkers, viewpoints and gun emplacements, and is located outside the village centre. Wn 12H is the only one of the positions built on Vlieland that has survived.
Nature around Oost-Vlieland
The dunes and the Wadden Sea are easily accessible from Oost-Vlieland. For more on nature, visit De Lepelaar, Vlieland’s nature education centre. It serves as a starting point for excursions, exhibitions and creative activities. There, you can learn about the nature of the Wadden area, listen to the sounds of the Vlieland night and compose a piece of music using bird calls.
A guided mudflat excursion lasts an hour and a half, starts at De Lepelaar nature education centre and is suitable for adults and children aged eight and over. Wellington boots are available free of charge. Check the dates and booking conditions before planning, as they may change. Another excursion takes you to Nieuwe Kooi, a freshwater area in a mixed forest outside the village centre. Plants, insects and animals can be found there all year round. The nature activities therefore differ both in their setting and their focus: mudflats and night sounds at De Lepelaar, and a freshwater area and mixed forest at Nieuwe Kooi.
