Aldtsjerk combines buildings from different centuries with art, local history, and routes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Aldtsjerk, you can choose where to stay based on your interests: historic architecture, church furnishings, art, or a walk through the town center. The specific dates and the different route requirements can help with your planning.

Architectural Heritage and Historic Details

De Klinze is a historic estate northeast of Aldtsjerk’s town center. The estate includes a main building, a historic garden, and parkland. The main building was built in 1655 by Hessel van Aysma under the name Aysmastate. The Oudkerkermolen was established in 1864 by a group of farmers. Bosk-Ein is a gardener’s house built in 1890 in the chalet style, originally belonging to Sminiastate. The iron-riveted bascule bridge on Van Sminiaweg dates from the 1920s and is currently operated as a self-service bridge.

Church, Art, and Remembrance

The Sint-Pauluskerk was built in the mid-12th century; its west tower dates from the early 13th century. Inside are a richly carved pulpit from 1630 and the Sminiabank, an elaborately designed seigneurial pew with a family crest held by angels. This makes it possible to distinguish different historical periods in the same building: the church’s construction, the later addition of the west tower, and the pulpit, which is dated considerably later.

Since 1989, Galerie Bloemrijk Vertrouwen has exhibited contemporary abstract and stylized art. The works on display may change over time. The Dorpshuis Oerein on Van Sminiaweg hosts a professional audio and slide presentation about the culture, nature, and history of Aldtsjerk and its surroundings. If you’d like to include this presentation in your stay, check in advance for a screening date.

The IJsbaangebouw Aldtsjerk, built in 1925, is a monument commemorating earlier speed skating races on the Aldtsjerkster Mar. The IJsclub Oudkerk offers a different perspective on time: it has been in existence since 1865 and continues to hold competitions on the Oudkerkster Meer. If you’d like to plan your stay around these competitions, check the event dates.

Routes and Getting Around

The 6.9-kilometer historic route through Oentsjerk and Aldtsjerk is a walk through Aldtsjerk’s historic town center and passes numerous monuments. Its length gives you a specific reference point for planning; check local conditions before setting out. The Rondje Aldtsjerk – Wyns – Bartlehiem route is not marked. Use a map or a downloaded GPX file for navigation. The first route focuses on distance and a walk through the town center, while the second requires navigating without markers. The Stukje Elfsteden route starts at the foot of the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden.

The Toeristisch Overstappunt Trynwâlden serves as a starting point for exploring the surrounding region on foot, by bicycle, or by boat. At the TOP, you can park your car and arrive by public transport; mooring a boat is sometimes possible there. Bicycle and walking junction networks, as well as places to eat and toilets, are nearby. When planning, bear in mind that mooring a boat is only possible occasionally.

Marwei 3 in Oudkerkstermeer has a special access requirement: it can only be reached by boat or on skates.
