Heeg lies on the Heegermeer and is a lively water sports village. In the village, you can rent sailboats and sloops, among other things. There is also a nature area for walks, a self-guided visitor route and several places with a strong cultural character. If you are planning a stay, you can therefore approach Heeg with different day plans in mind: activities on the water, nature and local history each offer their own focus.

Water sports on the Heegermeer

The 7.7-kilometre SUP and canoe route “Rondje poelen Heeg” starts in the centre of Heeg, near various rental companies. Its length and central starting point give the tour a clear framework. From April to September, you can sail aboard a traditional Frisian yacht. Groups have a minimum of four and a maximum of seven people; guests are welcome to take an active part in sailing and steering. Compared with the SUP and canoe route, the season, group size and opportunity to participate actively are therefore key planning details here. If you plan to take this trip, check the dates and availability.

The Skûtsje Aleida Hendrika offers another way to combine water and cycling. It operates seasonally as a sailing ferry across the Heegermeer and Slotermeer; bicycles can be carried in the hold. Depending on the option, cycling routes of 18 or 28 kilometres are provided for the return journey to Heeg or Balk. The return distance and destination therefore differ from those of the SUP and canoe route. As the ferry service is seasonal, it is advisable to check the timetable before travelling.

Nature area and routes on land

On the edge of Heeg lies the 12-hectare Heempark Heeg, where visitors can go for a walk. The nature area includes an orchard, a sand martin wall, an underwater observation hut and an apiary. This means you can find a variety of ways to experience nature in one place, from the orchard and apiary to the underwater observation hut. The park combines these features with the opportunity to explore on foot.

The Dorpskuier is another option on land: a 2.5-kilometre self-guided visitor route. It starts at the visitor centre in Heeg. Unlike a walk in the Heempark, both the route length and starting point are specified for the Dorpskuier. This makes it easier to compare options if you are looking for a route with a stated distance during your stay.

Church, maritime history and architecture

The Haghakerk stands on a small mound in the centre of the early medieval water village. It is surrounded by a cemetery and a picturesque church quarter known in Frisian as “tsjerkebuorren”. The church is therefore described not only by its location, but also by the neighbourhood around it. The Korneliske Ykes II is also anchored in the centre of Heeg. It is a reconstruction of the old Palingaken, bringing a connection to the history of Frisian shipping into the village landscape.

Villa Romsicht is also known as a heritage site in Heeg; it is also called “Ruim Zicht” and, colloquially, “De Villa”. It was designed by the architect W. Z. de Jong from Sneek in the eclectic style, with Art Nouveau decorations. These details offer a specific architectural point of reference, while the Haghakerk and church quarter are defined mainly by their location and surroundings.

Visitor information and dates for your stay

The visitor centre and tourist information office in Heeg provide information about the history, culture, water sports and leisure activities in Heeg and the Waterland van Friesland. The Dorpskuier also starts there. If you plan to use the centre to find your bearings, check the current opening hours in advance.

Heechspanning is an annual festival in Heeg. If you want the festival to be part of your reason for travelling, check the dates for your planned travel period. This lets you plan your trip around a specific event date, while the other attractions offer a range of options for enjoying the water, nature and local history.
