Lippenhuizen: Heathland, Turf Route and Frisian Heritage
Accommodation in Lippenhuizen
If you are looking for a hotel in Lippenhuizen, its landscapes, routes and Frisian heritage can help shape your impression of the place. Liphústerheide, the section of the Turf Route and the “Lippenhuizen and Koningsdiep stream valley” walking route offer different ways to experience the area. The water tower and Piterkerk are also protected buildings. These themes give you different starting points for planning your trip.
Heathland and Cultural Landscape
Liphústerheide is an extensive heathland between the Alddjip and the Bûtewei, below Lippenhuizen. It can only be reached from Lippenhuizen or Beetsterzwaag by bicycle, via a cycle path that runs through the heathland. If you include the heathland in your trip plans, take this access condition into account and check the current route before your visit, as path conditions can change.
The Turf Route is a tourist water route through southeastern Friesland; it connects Lippenhuizen with Hemrik, Gorredijk and Terwispel. The section of the Turf Route through Lippenhuizen passes through a varied cultural landscape of meadows and fields bordered by trees or shrubs. You can explore this section on foot or by bicycle. When choosing between these landscape highlights, you are also choosing between access to the heathland exclusively by bicycle and a section of the Turf Route that you can also explore on foot. The two landscapes also differ in character: Liphústerheide is an extensive heathland, while the Turf Route section passes through meadows and fields bordered by trees or shrubs. When planning an outing, you can therefore consider not only how you want to get around, but also the landscape character when choosing a destination in the area.
Walking Route and Orientation
Another route is the “Lippenhuizen and Koningsdiep stream valley” walking route. It starts at the corner of De Buorren and Buorsterwyk in the centre of Lippenhuizen; the Skarrekieker viewpoint is along the route. The starting point and viewpoint offer two specific reference points for planning. Unlike the Turf Route, which is described as a water route, this is explicitly a walking route. Check the current route before your outing, as route details can change.
Water Tower and Piterkerk
The water tower at De Buorren 149 has been a Rijksmonument (a listed national monument) since 14 September 1999. Its water tank is enclosed by an octagonal casing with a copper roof.
Piterkerk is one of seven Sint-Piter churches in Friesland and is protected as Rijksmonument No. 31859. Cultural events are regularly held in the church. If you would like to combine your trip with an event, check in advance whether a suitable date falls during your stay.
