Wirdum: Terp village, village history and walking routes
Accommodation in Wirdum
Wirdum is a terp village whose character is shaped by the church terp, historic buildings and two parallel streets. The terp was formed in the early Middle Ages. Its shape is still clearly visible, even though parts of it have been removed. If you are looking for hotels for a stay in Wirdum, these features offer concrete ways to include village history and walks in your travel plans.
Village character and historic buildings
The historic village centre developed around the church terp and along its western side, following Greate Buorren and Lytse Buorren. The two streets run parallel. Together with the church on the terp, they give the village centre a clear structure that reflects the village’s history.
The Sint Martinuskerk is dedicated to Saint Martin; both it and the Oenema-Cammingakapel date from the 13th century. The village’s building history also includes buildings that once served very different purposes. The former vicarage with coach house at Hôf 1 stands on a spacious plot opposite the church’s south façade. The former dairy at Kamp 1–3 comprises several factory halls with decorative gable crowns, as well as a director’s house dating from 1891.
Another building stands at Legedyk 68, on the road connecting the village centre with the old Bredyk. This location adds another named landmark to the church terp and streets, helping visitors find their way around. The historic buildings do not all tell the same story: the church and chapel date back to the 13th century, while the director’s house of the former dairy dates from 1891.
Walks and time outdoors
The Route Dorpen Zuid walking route passes through Swichum, Wirdum and Wytgaard. One complete version is 13.6 kilometres long. Another described walk starts at the Sint-Martinuskerk on Hof, where there is ample parking. The return route goes via Loodijk and ends at Hof by the church. This provides both a specific total distance and details of a walk’s starting point, return route and endpoint for planning.
The village’s history also includes how it was reached in the past: Wirdum was accessible mainly via the Tjaardervaart, Nieuwe Vaart and Wirdumervaart. It was not until the mid-19th century that the land connection was improved.
Animal pasture and places to eat
An animal pasture (dierenweide) was established in Wirdum in 2021. It is a place where young and old alike enjoy spending time with the animals.
The small family-run business Hotel Eetcafé Duhoux has been in Wirdum since 1916. After a walk or cycle ride, visitors can have coffee or lunch there; dinner is also available. A stay in Wirdum therefore offers a range of points of interest: the terp and historic village centre, named buildings, walking routes and a place to eat. If you are looking for suitable hotels in Wirdum, you can take these local interests into account when choosing where to stay.
